FRANKFORT, Ill. — A 40-year-old mother has been charged with first-degree murder after police said her 2-year-old son was found dead in the family’s basement on Sept. 1, hours after she discussed the Lindsay Clancy murder trial with friends.
A neighbor called 911 after discovering the child with a cord around his neck and began CPR as officers arrived, NBC Chicago reported. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The cause of death was listed as asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck.
The caller said an infant was also in the home, and two school-aged children arrived shortly afterward. None of them were harmed.
Officers found the child’s mother, Corie Walsh, upstairs in a bathtub with self-inflicted knife wounds. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her husband was out of state at the time, police said.
Authorities said Walsh told investigators she “did this to her baby because he was the ‘devil’ and the ‘anti-Christ’” and confessed to killing the child.
Witnesses told police Walsh had recently become “very invested” in the Lindsay Clancy case. Clancy was accused of killing her three children in Massachusetts and then attempting suicide; her defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. A jury later deliberated that case. Police said Walsh had been discussing the trial in a group text with friends just hours before her son’s death.
Walsh was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
