Магистратура победила! Я буду очень рада поделиться своим впечатлением от погружения в стандартизированное образование в 30+ лет, но пост напишу в субботу после пар, чтобы сформировать более полное представление. Спасибо вам за интерес!

Выходные выдались очень насыщенные: первые пары в магистратуре (очень много полезного!), игра на тренировку навыка публичных выступлений, нетворкинг "с широко закрытыми глазами". Честно говоря, после таких выходных нужны ещё одни. Как хорошо, что завтра всего 3 урока!

I don’t have any new groups this year, but I do have some amazing teen students that I have never taught before. And I need to get down to the bottom of what kind of people they are. I had to wait (with all those tests I’ve ranted about here https://t.me/random_musing_s/372), but the first thing I did as soon as we started actual lessons was Learning Preferences Analysis. It’s not the same as Learning Styles Analysis. Most of us are aware of the fact that the myth about Learning Styles has been debunked for a while now. There is no, and never has been any concrete evidence that Learning Styles exist. Cedar Riener and Daniel Willingham emphasized in their paper that while students may have preferences, there is no evidence that catering to these preferences enhances learning outcomes (https://fee.org/articles/learning-styles-don-t-actually-exist-studies-show/) But I’ve gone off-track (Thank God, not off the rails… yet) Either way, me inquiring about my students’ preferences is not just about trying to adjust my teaching. I do it for two main reasons: 1. Expectations. I work with teenagers, and they are quite unpredictable. People are all unpredictable really, but in my experience, adolescents are doubly so. Therefore, I ask them for their preferences to find out what I might be expecting of them. 2. Rapport. We all like being listened to. I might even go as far as to claim that understanding that their opinion matters is essential for teens. Their parents think they are babies, but expect them to act mature. Teenagers, themselves, feel grown up (and they definitely are, especially compared to their earlier experience!), but are not allowed much freedom (for pretty solid reasons). They are stuck in some kind of limbo so being asked and listened to, feeling genuinely (that’s important, you need to be sincere, they smell dishonesty like sharks do blood) acknowledged is a huge step to gaining their trust and respect. So, with this post I encourage you to ask your teen students about their preferences, evaluate their answer as a grown-up and behave accordingly. I kind of low-key want to have a group of C1 teacher-students... Mostly because I need more adults in my life, lol. What’s stopping me? Reason 1. I have not the foggiest as to where I should advertise it. Reason 2. I am not sure anybody would be interested even if I do find a place to advertise it. Reason 3. I have too many ideas to choose from. Reason 4. I might just keel over and die from overwork… ☠☠☠ #random_musings

Tests, tests, tests Today I wanted to share something interesting, but, alas, I am literally buried under. Under tests. Every year starts the same - the whole department conducts entry skill tests: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. I think you can easily guess that evaluating some of those is more troublesome and headache-inducing than others. RANT ON What I hate about checking Writing and Speaking is not even the fact that I don't like correcting mistakes (I do like it, duh! I am a teacher!). What I loathe from the bottom of my black-black heart is making. For me making means consulting the criteria (which our students are usually made aware of in advance), counting all the mistakes from different categories, evaluating content, cohesion and coherence. Don't get me started on Speaking and having to listen to one student a hundred times to mark it properly! ❓Why do I torture myself so much❓ It's simple. I love suffering. I want to be fair + I want to mitigate any risk of parents knocking on my door to demand an explanation as to why their child, the light of their life, got a 3, or, God forbid, a 2. RANT OFF ❓Do you like conducting, checking and marking tests❓ P.S. I went to my school's garden to mark tests today. Was totally worth it.

❓❓❓ЧТО Я ДЕЛАЮ НА ПЕРВЫХ УРОКАХ❓❓❓ Можно подумать, что я сразу устраиваю максимальный движ, и все радуются и выселятся. И, в принципе, они не будут сильно далеки от истины… Но эта активность длится 15-20 минут максимум, и все, finita la commedia. ❓Что же мы делаем остальное время❓ Обсуждаем правила, конечно! Даже с теми группами, которые у меня были в том году. Мы, люди, очень талантливые существа. В особенности тогда, когда нужно избежать наказания, а уж младшие подростки изворотливы донельзя. Поэтому необходимо всегда, из раза в раз, обозначать границы и правила. Дополнительно было бы неплохо отследить и озвучить логическую цепочку: если я сделаю это, к каким последствиям это приведет? Идеально, конечно, чтобы последствия были значимы лично для каждого ученика. Для детей это очень полезно – понимание правил дает чувство безопасности, четкое представление о том, что будет, если. А что вы думаете о правилах? Всегда ли нужно их озвучивать? П.С. На фото очередная “back-to-school” activity – ребята собирали из Лего свое «лето», потом по постройке соседа угадывали, что же он такое делал.
