The year of its founding is most often considered to be 1168: A fortress on the eastern edge of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality is linked to the name Andrei Bogoljubski. Later, the city served as a border point and trading settlement by the river, surviving raids and fires – and yet remaining in its place. What is most striking in Gorochowez is how much pre-imperial stone construction is still preserved here. In Russia, there are only about twenty civil stone "palaty" from the 17th century in total, and seven of them are located right here. For a small town, this is a rare density: merchant houses, built for “a long time,” with thick walls and a very serious, practical architecture. And just a few streets away begins another story – made of wood.
