For millions of people worldwide, surviving on less than $2.15 a day isn’t just difficult to imagine — it’s a daily reality.
Beyond the struggle to meet basic needs, families living in poverty often face stigma and unfair treatment.
“Poverty is an affront to human dignity and a denial of human rights. It closes off opportunities and leaves people more exposed when crisis strikes,” said #UnitedNations Secretary-General @antonioguterres on Saturday’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
“Let us mobilize the political will and investments needed to ensure everyone has a safe home, and the opportunity to build a life of dignity, free from poverty.”
426 million.
That is how many women and girls live in extreme poverty this year.
Despite global progress, women and girls continue to face greater barriers to escaping poverty and remain underrepresented in decisions that affect their lives.
On #EndPoverty Day, we call for greater investment in social protection, health and education to make a real difference in tackling women's poverty.
