How can you improve your ability to use AI for contract drafting, negotiation and analysis❓ You do not learn how to use AI by cramming the prompts, but by applying the first principles. You could be highly sought after by clients and by recruiters alike. Let me give you a taste of it - we are sharing a video below (at the end of the email) where we will teach you 3 things: 1️⃣ How to draft your first contract using AI 2️⃣ How to use AI to upload a contract and identify negotiation points based on your client’s interest 3️⃣ How to draft a highly-customised termination clause in a specific fact situation If you use AI like this, you will be producing high-quality work in record time. Hang on a minute - if you don’t know contract drafting, you will not be able to deploy AI to get high-quality outcomes. Most lawyers are unable to get started with AI because they do not know the first principles for contract drafting, negotiation and analysis, and are unable to provide the right prompts for that reason.

What about the rest❓ I am sure that there are some other law firms that are trying to train GPT models to draft contracts in their own style. While they may use ChatGPT to draft a few clauses here and there, average time spent on reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts has not reduced. Here are 5 ways in which you must use generative AI to improve contract drafting quality and output: 👉 Draft a full contract from scratch in at least 50% less time, of a quality that a 10+ years’ experience lawyer would draft 👉 Use AI to create comprehensive templates that could earlier be produced only by Big Law firms 👉 Identify risks and negotiation pointers that you may have otherwise missed for your clients 👉 Create training documents and standard operating processes for your juniors, which were only possible for big firms with large management teams 👉 Create negotiation playbooks for your client’s business teams as an external freelancer, which earlier required a full-blown in-house team working full-time Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could use AI to do all of this❓

Implement AI in your contract arsenal for these 5 things Amongst all categories of legal work, contract drafting was expected to be most radically transformed by the generative AI revolution, but did that transformation happen❓ In reality, very few lawyers are able to exploit its full potential. I searched on Google and only found one news item pertaining to a law firm that is creating its own contract negotiation tool - Allen & Overy.

It is one thing to know the work, another to know how to go out there and find work. I want our learners to learn both, not just one. When our learners message me even with a small success story, I celebrate, because I know what it means. I have been there. I have felt it. When she sent me such a message, Vaishnavi Shrivastava was still new to the freelancing arena. She currently specialises in international IP and trademark matters, and regularly drafts and reviews contracts. I have linked her Upwork profile here, so that you can see for yourself that she has already crossed USD 30,000 (nearly INR 25 lakh) in earnings from the equivalent of less than three months of work. Here is a screenshot from one more learner, he discovered financial freedom through LawSikho as well.

Just after I quit the law firm, an entrepreneur friend began raising money from a famous investor. I asked two friends for help in drafting a shareholders agreement as I had neither the time nor the full set of skills at the time. We were paid INR 1.2 lakh for the work, of which I got 25 percent as per my share. Not bad at all when every rupee counted. After quitting, I began drafting one contract every week, which would take care of my living expenses not only in Kolkata, but also when I later moved to Mumbai. My parents and teachers had told me that doing well in class and in my exams would help me escape poverty. In reality, it was freelancing and contract drafting which did that for me.
6690Loading...
09
Then contract drafting happened The pattern repeated itself when I wanted to quit my law firm job. It was a top law firm, but I did not like the job at all. It was freelance work that gave me the confidence to quit. For example, a Japanese gaming company came to me for some research and paid INR 1.7 lakh to me and Abhyuday for their India entry advice. This happened because I had worked in corporate law and was the owner of the iPleaders blog, which was already thriving. They wanted to know how they could enter the Indian market, how to navigate the FDI laws, how they could invest here and so on. This is what happens when you become a professional who can find his or her own work as a freelancer. You can just go out, pick up some work from your network, and make money.

Initially, I worked alone, but I soon had a team of 20 other law students working with me. In our fourth year, Abhyuday Agarwal (COO, LawSikho) and I launched a legal risk management consulting firm. Things grew in leaps and bounds. As a third-fourth year law student back in 2009-10, my average monthly income was INR 80,000 per month. That changed my life. I paid income tax, I paid my college fees myself. I could buy the books and software I needed, I could afford to take on internships in other big cities, and I even went to Hong Kong and the UK.

11
I decided as a child that I would not suffer like my parents. I studied hard because I was told that was the best way to escape poverty. I topped the national law entrance exam and got into a top law college – NUJS. My parents could not afford the fees, but I got an education loan. And then, my dream turned into a nightmare. At the end of the first year, the college nearly doubled the fees overnight, from INR 67,000 to 1.37 lakh per year. The bank refused to increase the loan amount without collateral, and we had nothing. I realised my loan would run out in my third year, and if I couldn’t start earning myself, I would not be able to complete my education. In my second year, I started to earn through freelance work. At first, I worked for CLAT coaching. Later, I worked as a ghostwriter. I also began getting work from some startups in Kolkata.

Contract drafting changed my life, what stops you❓ Today, I will briefly tell you why I am a big advocate of freelancing. And also why contract drafting can be as big a game changer for you as it was for me. The rest, you will hear at our upcoming free online bootcamp on international contract drafting. I am from a very humble background. In 1991, at the peak of the recession, my parents were living in a 150 sq ft one-room government flat with three-year-old me, and my one-year-old sister. Very soon, we were unable to pay for electricity and the line was disconnected. There was often not enough to eat, and though my mother tried her hardest to get a job so she could support my father’s meagre income, it took many years before she found one.

You may want to quit the legal profession to nurture a different career, but you may still perform contract drafting work on the side to sustain yourself financially, or have it as a backup option. If you don’t have contract drafting skills, it is a great deal of problem anyway. You are not even a complete lawyer without adequate contract drafting skills. This is your chance to take your contract drafting skills to the next level and find incredible opportunities to use those skills to earn better. We will show you the step-by-step roadmap and even teach you a lot of practical contract drafting skills and share several free materials with you in a free, 3-day, live online bootcamp from June 7th-9th, 2024, from 7 pm to 10 pm IST. Even law students can become financially independent while studying in college, and even support their family if their parents are not financially well off. Struggling litigators who are underpaid or struggling to establish themselves can draft contracts on the side to earn a side income, even build goodwill amongst potential clients for future litigation matters. Someone who lives in a small city, or who simply wants to earn an extra buck, can access international freelancing opportunities. There are many areas of law where it is possible to work remotely. However, the best remote work opportunities in legal are available undoubtedly in contract drafting. It cuts across geographies, industries and entire economies. Contract drafting is the wonder drug for remote work - it is amongst the easiest practical skills to learn and monetise. It will never stop being useful in any scenario.

By the time I went to college, my father had quit his job and moved to a top corporate law firm as a senior tax partner. Then everything changed. But it makes me wonder, how would life be different if my mother had the option of remote work available to her back then❓ Is it possible that she could draft contracts, policies, notices remotely for clients and earn a side income, like many of my students do today, without taking business risks or making monetary investments? ❓ Could she eventually join a law firm or something? Especially after I grew up❓ Would she have to sacrifice her career and ambitions for me if I was born in 2018 and not in 1988❓ I have to let that thought go for now. I am starting to derive peace from something else that is possible today. Today, women who have a law degree do not have to sacrifice their career to raise a family. They can also be in charge of their own family’s financial destiny. Of course this is not restricted to mothers of young children.

I was 10 years old back then. For 3 days, I tried to sell her paintings in the event, actively speaking to everyone who walked by our stall. We didn’t close any sales initially. Nita Ambani was the chief guest of the event, and she visited our stall with a cavalcade of her following. We thought she’d buy something, but even she didn’t. Eventually, a couple of paintings were bought, at throwaway prices. We didn’t even recover the event cost. In our world, these were heavy losses to shoulder, with no learnings for the future and no access to doing things better. We didn’t know how to do business. My mother gave up, naturally. Our money problems did not change in the years ahead.

Government jobs paid very low salaries back then, unless someone was corrupt you could not be rich as a govt employee. I grew up amidst a lot of tension and anxiety in the house, specifically over money. Then, my mother decided to earn money to help my dad foot our expenses by earning a side income. This was the ‘90s. Owing to family obligations, she couldn’t build a litigation practice despite having an LLB degree. Barely a handful of law firms existed back then, and it would take 30 years before remote work became viable. Yet, she had a few hours of free time everyday when she could work at home. So my mother resorted to oil painting on canvas, a hobby that she nurtured as a college student. This time, she tried to make a small side gig out of it. Maybe it could even blossom into a full-fledged career, who knew❓ She made a few paintings in 3 months, and then we booked a stall in an exhibition which would potentially be attended by the Who’s Who of South Mumbai.

My mom couldn’t be a lawyer, she didn’t have what you do This is one of my mother’s most appreciated paintings, showing how a human being gracefully ages through life.. My mother holds an LLB degree, but has never practised law. She has been a homemaker. I grew up in South Mumbai, and our family expenses were quite high. My school friends belonged to rich families without exception. My father had a govt job, govt salary. While I didn’t personally suffer, my parents would frequently argue about money. It was painful to watch.

How to prepare for your first in-house counsel interview

28
How to prepare for your first in-house counsel interview My best guess: founders or senior most partners at big law firms, some top senior advocates at the Supreme Court. In 2021, it is probably a lawyer who joined a startup early on & got equity. Lawyers at Zomato, PolicyBazaar made a lot more money than senior partners in top law firms if they held significant ESOPS or sweat equity at the time of IPO. I am not talking about a little more, but 10x or 100x. For example, within 1 yr of joining Coinbase, their new legal chief made 18 million USD when the startup listed. What's going on? Now the primary vehicle of wealth creation is a startup disrupting an industry using technology. Type ‘YES’ on this message to get a primer on “How to prepare for your first in-house counsel interview”. As an in-house counsel who gets started early, you have a rapid expressway to success in your legal career. Do you want a tried & tested plan that you can use to become an in-house counsel❓ Join us in the bootcamp TODAY @7 PM IST.

How likely is this person to be successful: ❌ Sleeps until noon every day ❌ Watch reality TV for hours ❌ Gossip with friends on phone for hours ❌ Scroll through social media mindlessly ❌ Addicted to video games, plays multiplayer games late into the night ❌ Watches every IPL match with a tight group of friends, along with beer and chakna ❌ Swipes right a thousand times every week on dating apps, or got married to a random stranger their parents chose for them Do you know people like this? The same people will say that they do not have time to learn new skills, no time to read a book, no time to start a business, no money to invest and so on. Now here is one more person: ⭐️ Measures their sleep to ensure they get optimal rest, goes to bed early ⭐️ Have no TV at home, or even if they have one do not have time to watch anything other than news ⭐️ Don’t have time for chit chat, will rather cold call prospects or potential business partners ⭐️ Is a producer on social media, not a mere consumer. Posts valuable content every day to grow their personal brand. ⭐️ Addicted to learning new skills, and applying in their workplace and is trying to start a side hustle ⭐️ Makes time to work out, even if for 10 mins per day, and stay away from junk food. Maybe will watch the IPL final, no time for every match. Avoids loser gangs, wants to have friends who are also in mission mode. ⭐️ Very careful about choosing a life partner, wants to find someone with similar values and goals in life Is this person likely to succeed❓ Your choices decide the outcome you have in life far more than luck. You get to create your luck with every choice you make, every single day. Make a good choice this weekend. Join our 3 day free online LIVE bootcamp. Here are some questions a product counsel would look at: 👉 Is it legally permissible to levy a surge fee inside an app during times of high-demand? (Think Uber/Cleartrip/Zomato, etc.) 👉 Can you charge customers different fees based on their usage of the app? Would it steer clear of competition or consumer laws❓ 👉 Does location tracking of your sales team/customers violate data protection or privacy laws❓ 👉 Does the method of receiving payments violate any of RBI's regulations❓ 👉 Are labour laws attracted to the unique business model of a company which may engage freelancers❓ 👉 Does the business model of the company require some additional registrations in the state/country where it is accessed❓ The product is conceptualised by the business teams, and they'll fight hard for your approval. In an MNC, a global General Counsel may have already approved this at the global level, so your research needs to be very thorough. You will not get a detailed brief to write a memo like a law firm lawyer, or like a senior advocate from a briefing counsel - you will need to sit with the business teams. This is part of the excitement. They may take you through mockups of the app, explore the functionality like a consumer, before mass release. You have to engage and apply your mind.

In-house counsels experience more work satisfaction as they perform meaningful and challenging work Let me give you some examples. Lately, I am seeing an explosion of "Product Legal" or "Product Counsel" - these are in-house job opportunities. Consumer-facing companies, whether they are new-age startups or big tech companies, love hiring in this role, and pay top dollar. Law firm lawyers do not do this work. Litigators have no clue about it. Even traditional in-house counsels are caught unawares. Product counsel is a re-imagined role for a compliance lawyer. However, rather than looking at paperwork and filings alone, you get to experience the entire workings and functioning of a tech product, to see if it meets the applicable legal requirements. Often, these roles can be multi-jurisdictional in nature - as companies launch apps that are international. This role is preventive and strategic in nature - and you need to be on top of your game as mistakes will trigger mass legal violations.

Here are 5 ways in which you must use generative AI to improve contract drafting quality and output: 👉 Draft a full contract from scratch in at least 50% less time, of a quality that a 10+ years’ experience lawyer would draft 👉 Use AI to create comprehensive templates that could earlier be produced only by Big Law firms 👉 Identify risks and negotiation pointers that you may have otherwise missed for your clients 👉 Create training documents and standard operating processes for your juniors, which were only possible for big firms with large management teams 👉 Create negotiation playbooks for your client’s business teams as an external freelancer, which earlier required a full-blown in-house team working full-time Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could use AI to do all of this
