👀 The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) has warned recipients of statutory levy funding that they should abstain from attending industry-funded events.
OHID is charged with distributing the specific levy funds earmarked for gambling harm prevention, and consistent with noises coming from the commissioners over the past year, independence from industry seems to be the department’s priority at all costs.
The prohibition appears to be framed as guidance: “Things to avoid: Attendance or participation in industry funded events.” But presented, as it is, alongside the absolute ban on accepting industry funding, it has acted as an effective block on charities attending this week’s iGB Live event.

| 2 | 👋 The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has formally withdrawn its membership from the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), citing deep opposition to the council’s new partnership with prediction markets platform Kalshi.
In a letter dated 1 July, MGCB executive director Henry Williams expressed strong disapproval of Kalshi’s recent induction. Kalshi joined the problem gambling group as a platinum-level member in May, committing a two-year $2m investment to the organisation.
Williams stated that the affiliation directly undermines state enforcement actions against prediction markets. It also risks weakening the regulatory positions of state bodies nationwide, he wrote.

| 3 | 👀 Laurence Escalante has resigned as CEO and executive chairman of Virtual Gaming Worlds, following a five-month leave of absence from the social gaming business he founded.
The Perth company said today (3 July) that the decision took effect immediately. Escalante will focus on "personal matters, private business, investing and philanthropy," according to the company announcement.
He had been on leave since January after VGW became aware of charges brought against him by Western Australia Police. The company said those matters were personal and unrelated to its operations.

| 4 | 🇦🇺 Australia’s financial crime watchdog AUSTRAC has cleared Sportsbet after the Flutter-owned operator completed a regulator-mandated anti-money laundering (AML) remediation programme.
Confirming the news, AUSTRAC said it had finalised the enforceable undertaking accepted by Sportsbet in May 2024. An independent external auditor verified Sportsbet had successfully implemented the required improvements to its AML and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) controls.
The undertaking was introduced following concerns identified during AUSTRAC’s supervision of the online wagering sector. This required Sportsbet to strengthen its governance, risk management, customer monitoring and reporting processes.

| 5 | ⚽ Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed that Betano will feature on the club’s training tops next season under a new sponsorship deal.
The Kaizen Gaming-owned brand has been named an official partner of the men’s first team for 2026/27. After that, the training-wear sponsorship will expire, but Betano will remain Tottenham’s official betting partner for Europe and Latam up until 2029.
The voluntary ban on front-of-shirt sponsorships in the Premier League will be active for the first time next season, but many clubs have developed alternative partnership strategies in order to maintain the mutually beneficial and lucrative relationship between betting and football.

| 6 | ✍️ Ohio lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would dramatically scale back the state’s legal sports betting market, including a proposed ban on online wagering and several popular betting products.
Introduced into the Ohio House yesterday, Ohio House Bill 971 – also known as the ‘Save Ohio Sports Act’ – has the backing of 10 Republican representatives. The proposal was first unveiled by lawmakers in April, with its formal introduction marking the start of the legislative process.
If passed, the legislation would ban online and mobile sports betting, restricting wagers to in-person betting at land-based casinos. There would also be a ban placed on live or in-play betting, as well as parlay bets.

| 7 | 🇦🇺 Australia’s government has introduced its gambling reform bill to parliament, where it has already attracted criticism from opposition parties and crossbench MPs over whether the proposed measures go far enough.
The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Bill 2026 was formally put forward today. While most measures had already been announced by the government earlier this year, the bill’s introduction marks the start of the parliamentary process as lawmakers prepare to debate the proposed reforms.
Despite support for tighter gambling regulation in Australia, the bill has drawn criticism from across parliament. Some opposition MPs have called for the legislation to undergo further scrutiny, while crossbench MPs and the Greens argue it falls short of the sweeping reforms recommended by the Murphy Inquiry into online gambling.

| 8 | 👀 Tim Miller, executive director of research and policy at the Gambling Commission (UKGC), has offered a parting shot to industry before his September exit from the regulator.
In conversation with NEXT.io at iGB Live, Miller spoke about some of the names dotted around the Excel London, and whether the regulator is concerned that there are companies here known to be engaged with the black market.
“There are absolutely names that I see on the show floor here today that I would have some concerns about,” Miller said. “I think what it indicates is that we talk about the licensed market and the illegal market like they are two coexisting but completely separate entities, and that’s just not the reality. It is a very blurry line between the two of those.”

| 9 | ✋ A San Francisco Superior Court judge has invalidated state rules that would have reshaped gambling at California cardrooms.
California has 78 licensed cardrooms, according to the state's Gambling Control Commission. Several municipalities rely on cardroom receipts to finance police, parks, libraries and other local services.
Judge Richard Darwin found that the Bureau of Gambling Control had exceeded its authority by imposing restrictions on the venues statewide. The bureau operates within Attorney General Rob Bonta's Department of Justice. He accepted the cardrooms' argument that enforcement powers cannot substitute for legislative authority to recast lawful games.

| 10 | 💰 North Carolina is preparing to move forward with an increased tax on sports betting, joining a handful of states that are seeking to get more revenue from the industry.
North Carolina’s new budget agreement would raise the tax on interactive sports betting operators to 23% from 18%. The increase would apply to gross wagering revenue received after the measure becomes law.
While the increase is significant, it is lower than the 36% rate lawmakers had sought last year. The conference report remains subject to final votes in the House and Senate.

The SMF’s research was revealed during a panel on 30 June, where Gideon Salutin, chief economist at the think tank, described a “very, very important correlation between areas that are most at risk, most deprived, and those that demonstrate the most prevalence for AGCs.”

| 13 | 🇬🇧 The Betting and Gaming Council has warned an increase in UK gambling licence fees will add to the financial burden on licensed operators, calling for greater accountability and efficiency from the Gambling Commission.
This week, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport published its response to a consultation on proposed licence fee changes. The consultation, which ran from January to March, considered increasing and restructuring fees to provide the regulator with additional funding.
The government confirmed it will implement the changes from 1 October, increasing the Commission’s overall licence fee income by 25%. However, this rise will not be applied uniformly. Fees will vary by licence type under a revised structure that introduces new bands for
most operating licences.
