Install the required software The new file system is very small and does not contain many essential programs in the default installation. Below are a few packages that we recommend for everyday use of Debian and Kali. Some programs are not required yet, but you will have an easier time working through future articles that use Android as the primary jailbreak device if you install them now. 👉 Screen is a console multiplexer that allows users to run multiple terminals simultaneously and switch between them. This is one of the most important packages to install when using UserLAnd. Android phones do not handle long SSH sessions well and have a habit of dropping connections for no apparent reason. This connection loss can cause running commands to stop working without the ability to reconnect to the interrupted session to view the command's progress. Screen is used to support persistent shell sessions. 👉 Net-tools is a set of utilities containing ifconfig, netstat, route and several other useful network applications. 👉 Netcat is a feature-rich UNIX utility designed to be a reliable tool for creating TCP and UDP connections. Netcat can be used to create and interact with simple macOS backdoors. 👉 Neofetch (shown on the cover photo for this article) is a cross-platform utility for collecting system information. It conveniently displays the technical characteristics of the system along with the distribution logo. This package has no real use other than showing off the features of your system to colleagues and friends. Neofetch is a bit buggy with UserLAnd distributions, but in case you're wondering how we created the cover photo, we included it in this list. 👉 GnuPG - Typically used for file encryption and email security. Some installation scripts (such as Metasploit's) use gpg to import their software signing keys. It is possible to manually install Metasploit without gpg, but having GPG on the system will make the installation process less complicated. 👉 cURL is a command line tool used to download files over HTTP and other popular protocols. This is a useful tool for downloading files from the Internet. 👉 Wget - Like cURL, wget is a command line tool used to download files from the Internet. Some developers prefer this over cURL, so it's useful to have that too, just in case. 👉 Git is a popular software version control system that is commonly used for cloning (downloading) GitHub projects. 👉 Nano is a console text editor. It makes editing files via SSH more convenient. If you prefer Vim or Emacs, then download those editors (or in addition to nano). The above packages can be installed using the apt-get command. apt-get update && apt-get install net-tools netcat neofetch gnupg curl wget git nano screen

6️⃣ Update your OS The first thing you need to do after installing a new operating system on your Android phone is to make sure that the system is up to date. You can update the system by first using the su command to get root in the console, and then the standard system update commands apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

In the screenshot above, for example, you can see that there is only one package that needs to be updated.

At this stage, it is convenient to use a Bluetooth keyboard synchronized with your phone - this will greatly simplify setting up the OS, but in principle this is not necessary. If you don't use a Bluetooth keyboard, we recommend installing Hacker's Keyboard from Google Play. A little later you will understand why.

4️⃣ Interacting with the File System Once the installation is complete, go to the Sessions tab and select the option you just created. UserLAnd will automatically try to open ConnectBot and ask, “Are you sure you want to continue connecting?” (“Are you sure you want to continue connecting”). Click Yes and enter the password you created in the previous step.

During our first attempt to use UserLAnd, we received the following error: “ Failed to extract file system. Something went wrong ” (“Could not extract filesystem. Something went wrong”). Deleting and reinstalling the UserLAnd application helped. If this issue still persists, please open a new issue on GitHub

UserLAnd will then download the necessary executables and scripts from its GitHub repository, which it uses to create file systems. The time it takes to download and unzip the required resources depends on your Android processor and internet connection speed. In some tests, the installation process took up to 20 minutes, so be patient.
