Translation in Ancient Greece
today's studies reveal that the reason behind the spread of Greek civilization and culture to a large area is the different kinds of relationships with various states and cultures.
The main means of communication was a translation in some aspects such as diplomacy, rule of people, etc.
2_Translation in Ancient Rome
It is a well-known fact that many of the documents and works have survived until today as a result of the translation conducted by Roman translators and writers. As the outcomes of translation efforts came to light, thinkers like Cicero, Horace, and others realized that translation made some positive contributions to their creativity in many respects.
Translation was the key to construct their own identity as it helped to develop new genres of literary and culture .
3_Cicero and Horace
This is why translators were also one of the best writers of that time. In Ancient Rome, the most important representative of understanding to create a new text with "free" style translation was Cicero. "in Ancient Rome, translators tried to surpass the difference between the level of development of the two
languages by changing content and structure.
Cicero added a neat preface to his works and he explained the excuses of following different roads in his translations in those prefaces. In this respect, we may consider Cicero's views as the first steps to explain translation performance in a theoretical way.
4_St. Jerome
St. Jerome, who lived between the years of 348 and 420, was the most outstanding Biblical translator of late Antiquity. He was one of the most influential theorists in Biblical translation as the translators before and after him like Cicero and Martin Luther.
According to Jerome, there should be a difference between translation of the texts like profane and sacred. He claims that translation of sacred texts needs more care as they are the words of God and cannot be equal to human made texts.
5_John Wycliffe
The problem with translation of the holy texts like Bible was to convey the message of God to people as accurately as possibl. According to Wycliffe, all human beings were directly responsible to God, the Bible was applicable to all human beings and they should be given the opportunity to access to the words of God in their own language so they could understand the message. He added a preface to the second version of Wycliffite Bible and listed four stages of translation as follows:
1- trying to find the old Bibles and glosses in Latin in order to build a solid source text;
2- comparing the versions
3- researching for the meaning of hard words and complex meanings;
4- translating the "meaning of the sentences" in a clear way and counselling the end result to a group of collaborators in order to avoid any mistranslation.
6_Martin Luther
The sixteenth century hosts another important translation theorist who was Martin Luther. He followed the same path like St. Jerome. Even though the century difference between them, their views on translation show some similarities. Luther also made translations with the aim of understandability of texts, but he took a step further by claiming that the sacred texts should be comprehensible to an ordinary person.
