I have been spending a great deal of time in reflection lately, moving through memories, looking through old things, and finding myself returning to moments I once experienced as ordinary parts of life.
Grief changes the way you see those things.
It can make you look at something incredibly simple and suddenly realize how much love was actually held inside of it.
In my family, there has always been a tradition of giving cards for birthdays, holidays, and other occasions. For most of my life, they were simply part of the rhythm of family—someone chose the card, wrote something inside, signed their name, gave it to you, and eventually it was placed away somewhere.
Now, after losing someone very close to me, I look at those cards completely differently.
I can hold something they once held.
I can see their handwriting.
I can read words they chose specifically for me… And suddenly something as simple as a birthday card becomes priceless.
There are things grief teaches you that words cannot fully explain. Sometimes it is simply a feeling that settles into you—the realization that the smallest gestures were never really small at all.
A handwritten note. A photograph. A recipe passed down. A drawing from childhood. A birthday tradition. A familiar saying. The way someone laughed. The way they greeted you. The way they made you feel when you walked into a room.
These are the things that remain.
It has made me think again about why preserving memories matters so much. An archive does not have to contain grand or extraordinary things. Sometimes the most important archive a family carries is made from ordinary pieces of a life that were loved enough to be kept.
And I think about children especially.
One day, our children may look back on the life we shared with them in much the same way. Perhaps our grandchildren will. Perhaps even our great-grandchildren will encounter something we wrote, something we kept, a photograph, a letter, a tradition that continued through the family, and through that small thing they will come to know a little more about who we were.
But beyond what we leave physically, they will also carry how we made them feel.
They may remember whether we listened when they spoke. Whether they felt safe coming to us. Whether there was laughter in the home. Whether birthdays felt special. Whether we made space for the little things. Whether love was something they could recognize through the way we lived beside them.
I think that is what has been weighing on my heart the most.
We do not know how much chronology we are given with one another.
And because of that, perhaps one of the most meaningful things we can do is live in such a way that the people we love are left with memories worth holding.
Not perfect memories.
Real ones.
Moments of care. Presence. Laughter. Tradition. Kindness. Words written by hand. Conversations remembered years later. The seemingly ordinary things that become extraordinary only when we understand that a particular moment will never arrive in exactly the same way again.
I feel profoundly grateful for the connection I was given with the person I am mourning. There are parts of that relationship that language will never be able to contain, yet I can still feel its imprint through what remains.
And perhaps that is why I wanted to share this here.
Because while we still have the opportunity to love the people who are beside us, there is something worth remembering:
Every little bit counts.
The card matters.
The conversation matters.
The traditions matter.
The way you make someone feel matters.
The memories you are creating while simply living your life may one day become some of the most precious things another person carries.
So I want to leave you with something to sit with quietly:
When your children, grandchildren, or the people you love look back on their life with you one day, what do you hope they remember?
And beyond remembering what you gave them or what you did together, how do you hope it felt to be loved by you?

| 20 |  🌙Children often see and experience the world in ways that are vivid, creative, and deeply felt.
My daughter recently shared a dream that affected her so strongly she woke up in tears. It stayed with her long after she opened her eyes, which left me reflecting on the dreams children carry, remember, and bring back with them.
I have had experiences of waking from dreams with the same depth of emotion. Some later made sense in ways I didn’t expect, while others seemed to offer insight into thoughts, feelings, or experiences I was processing at the time.
My daughter does not often have dreams that affect her this deeply, which is part of what sparked my curiosity. I often ask her about her dreams so she knows she can share them openly, whether they are joyful, strange, memorable, or unsettling.
