FM meets capital market participants ahead of budget 2024
- Industry suggested to divest some stake in low float PSU stocks and also said they are seeing valuation bubble in some cases (low float PSUs). - Also suggested to increase STT on HFT/algo based hedge funds and levy higher STT on big F&O traders with turnover of >₹1,000 crore. - Also suggested to create barrier for retail from excessive F&O speculation and losses.

F&O transactions may attract higher tax rates
- Govt planning to bring F&O income into “speculative income”. It is considered as “business income” as of now.
- Speculative income means we have to pay straight 30% tax on the gains. It also means that losses from F&O can only get offset against gains from F&O.
- As current practice, we can offset F&O profits with losses arising from other business and vice versa.
- Govt could also introduce TDS (Tax deductible at source) on F&O transaction.
