IRÓN
Minjong Kim, János Hunor Vári, Paul Sturm

IRÓN is a unique writing gear designed and created by first-year students Minjong Kim, Paul Sturm and János Hunor Vári during the 2021–22 Autumn semester, in the class Tools Make Shapes of Kai Bernau. The tool itself is built with small metallic elements from a local DIY store, and one bold bearing assembled with screws to hold two pencils or markers. The concept of IRÓN comes from what we call ‘lazy line’, when two endpoints of the writing tool are inaccurately moving together or the second axis improperly follows the path of the first one.

János Hunor Vári is a type and graphic designer, art director originally from Hungary, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Recent graduate of the Master Type Design programme of ECAL – Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne. His practice is built on experimenting with unexpected tools and materials, and on a speculative and playful approach to serve both cultural and commercial purposes.

In collaboration with LA-based graphic designer Brian Roettinger, Optimo developed a custom display typeface with a powerful graphic identity. Intended for the musician Steve Aoki’s Neon Future album campaign, the typeface draws inspiration from an iconic Swiss graphic design artwork.

Aether plays with light, callenging the uniform grey tone within letters. Derived from 19th Century modern faces, and grounded in a geometric framework, Aether incorporates a set of predefined curves on a rhythmic system. This ensures an identical stem interval within and between letters for a consistent and rational appearance.
The family contains two stylistic variations emphasizing the parametric construction: Aether A, without optical adjustments, results in dark brackets and joints for a bold and distinctive look. Aether B incorporates optical adjustments to enhance legibility and refine the overall design.
