The 1st benefit is - you can apply to some of its universities for FREE WITHOUT REQUESTING A FEE WAIVER like in the Common App where your counselor have to request a fee waiver to let you apply for free. #usuniversities What kind of hook are Ivy League colleges looking for? I know that my grades/extracurriculars are not the most important. What makes accepted students stand out? 🔹 This misstates what the eight Ivy League schools are looking for. 375,000 students applied for the total of 21,000 spots in the freshman classes of the eight Ivy League schools. 🔹 To make the FIRST computer cut you need the perfect (or almost perfect grades - approx 98% or better ) and perfect scores on the ACT or SAT ( also 98% or better ) but that is not enough because frankly there are 44,000 perfect or almost perfect scores on the SAT and ACT in one calendar year in the world and 250,000 perfect 4.0 students just in the US also each graduating year. Now the TOTAL number of freshman accepted collectively to all eight Ivy League schools is 21,000 people. TOTAL among the eight schools. The schools turn down many many many perfect grade students who also have perfect SATs because frankly there is not enough room for all the perfect academic students. BUT you need that perfection - or almost perfection in academic to make it past the first computer cut. After you make the first computer cut admission teams at each school will review the applications looking for those individuals who have accomplished something in one or two disciplines in an extra ordinary way - movie star, top five person in the world in tennis, rubrics cube world champion, son or daughter of a head of state, a math Olympiad gold medal winner, someone with a huge disability who over came it. BUT those things alone will get you nothing. You need to make the first cut on the grades and scores which is why your question mistakes the application process to the Ivys. You need those perfect or almost perfect grades to simply get in the running for consideration. You need those perfect or almost perfect SAT or ACT scores to make the computer cut. I paid full tuition for two sons to go to MIT( I realize MIT is not an Ivy league school but is a super-elite expensive school).. Their mother (a physician) refused to pay anything (her logic was they could go to many colleges for free). I don't regret it at all. They took out a few loans. One has paid all off and one could just write the check. Mostly it was my money. They started 5-10 years ahead. My 22 year old makes $250,000 a year with incredible benefits....Was that worth it? Heck yes to him. It was a generational transfer of wealth. The other one is perhaps $20k behind. Sure I am $400,000 poorer. So what. I could stand the hit.
