This is a recently-erected statue of a Pike Man to commemorate 1798. It was originally intended for Wexford, place of Vinegar Hill, to celebrate the famous courage of the ordinary people in that time and place. But the people in Wexford said ‘No’ and they were right. Discernment. This pike man is not correct, he is beseeching and holding a scroll of all things, as if we were meek and also fought with words, written words, back then — we do that now. It is a complete rewrite of our history. Disgusting. The Wexford people didn’t want it, so it was placed in a Cork town, they accepted it, originally with a plaque written of a translation of a poem in Urdu (yes, Urdu) We are Irish, a long history of brutal oppression under the largest empire in the world in recent history. We are the ones who have important things that pulse on in our collective, and that’s why the Regime commissions statues like this, to blandwash our lives experience and knowledge. It is not the online video about ancient civilisations or Tartarians that count now, it is the things you received and heard from a grandmother who lived through the civil war, or our parents’ oppression under Vatican rule. The Black Forge Inn, in Crumlin, Dublin was formerly called The Bentley, like the make of flash, luxury cars that the big exhibitionist fighter man likes to drive around in. In towns around Ireland the English were punishing blacksmiths. The forge was the place that counted back then. Many people learn that Vinegar Hill was the last great stand we made against the English, but we are not often offered the view that Vinegar Hill was originally fomented by the Crown so as to frighten settled English and Anglo-Irish landowners into feeling insecure in Ireland without firmer control by London parliament. The Irish were defeated at Vinegar Hill in 1798. Then in 1801 the Irish Parliament was dissolved and the Act of Union subsumed our parliament into the Parliament of Great Britain.
