Long Live the Dollar U.S. Treasury data indicates there is very strong foreign demand for Treasury securities despite perceived concerns of sanctions and the unsustainable fiscal trajectory. Foreign Treasury holdings data are difficult to parse because they fluctuate in part due to changes in market valuation, but a new dataset containing net transactions provides a clear read on foreign demand. Foreign investors over the past year purchased $700b in longer dated Treasuries, an amount that is close to the entire net issuance of longer dated Treasuries in that period. However, some countries that are historically large investors in Treasuries have been net sellers. This post walks through some key highlights in foreign demand for U.S. assets, shows that U.S. equities are not popular despite the ongoing stock market rally, and notes that increased Treasury holdings by foreigners would make the Treasury market especially sensitive to a policy of dollar devaluation. 1/4
