The Brazil nut tree relies on large-bodied bees, particularly orchid bees, for pollination. These bees can lift the flower hood to access nectar, a process that occurs during the first half of the year. The fruits, which take over a year to mature, develop into tough, woody capsules containing 10–25 seeds (Brazil nuts). These capsules are remarkably durable and can survive a 100-foot drop without breaking, protecting the seeds inside. Agoutis, rodents with strong teeth, play an unintentional role in supporting the tree’s reproduction by gnawing through the capsules to reach the seeds. They often bury extra seeds for later use, aiding in their dispersal. @scienceflix ⚛️

Basking sharks, the second-largest shark species, can reach lengths of up to 12 meters (40 feet) and weigh around 7.2 metric tons. They are filter feeders that only consume plankton. Basking sharks have a large mouth and are typically solitary, although they sometimes form small groups while feeding. They are ovoviviparous, giving birth to live young. The gestation period is believed to be quite long, potentially up to 3.5 years. This slow reproductive cycle is one of the reasons they are classified as an endangered species. @scienceflix ⚛️

Colugos, also known as flying lemurs, fold back their patagium to poop, though research on this behavior is limited but observed. The patagium, a large gliding membrane, extends from their face to the tips of their claws and tail, enabling them to glide between trees. They can fold it back when not gliding, likely also for defecation or to create a pouch for their baby. @scienceflix ⚛️

Snow leopards inhabit the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the world’s highest and largest plateau known for its extreme cold. These predators sometimes target domesticated yaks, which are protected by Tibetan mastiffs and fences. Despite these challenges, snow leopards persist, often preying on unguarded yaks. Local communities help protect these cats by compensating herders for livestock losses, preventing hunting and allowing the snow leopard population to thrive. @scienceflix ⚛️

This female subadult Lyssomanes viridis spider has cone-shaped, fluid-filled eye structures that move inside its cephalothorax, while the outer lenses remain stationary. This movement of the retina at the back of the eye creates the illusion that the entire eyeball is moving. In simple terms, the retina moves at the back of the eyeball, while the front lens does not, making it appear as though the eyes are moving around. The cephalothorax, which is essentially the spider’s head, houses these eye structures. All spiders of this species have this characteristic. @scienceflix ⚛️

Sea anemones are fascinating predators anchored to the sea floor. They capture drifting food particles with their stinging tentacles, which paralyze small organisms like plankton and fish. Although they primarily feed on smaller prey, they can also catch larger creatures like jellyfish. Their tentacles entangle and subdue these larger animals, allowing sea anemones to be flexible in their feeding strategy despite being rooted in one spot. @scienceflix ⚛️

The Guianan cock-of-the-rock uses a lek mating system. Males gather in specific areas called leks to compete for female attention with elaborate displays. Females observe these displays and typically mate with one or a few males, often choosing the most impressive performer. This behavior likely favors males with good genes, but isn’t the sole factor. After mating, the female builds a nest and raises the chicks on her own, while the male remains at the lek to attract more mates. @scienceflix ⚛️

Harris hawks stand out among raptors for their cooperative hunting style. They work together in family groups that typically consist of a breeding pair and their offspring, sometimes including up to seven birds. They may flush out prey from hiding, corner it, or take turns chasing it until it’s exhausted. This teamwork significantly increases their hunting success compared to solitary hunting. @scienceflix ⚛️
