🏛️ *Sovereign Wealth Funds Now Manage More Than $16 Trillion*
Sovereign wealth funds held about $3 trillion in assets in 2008. Today they manage more than $16 trillion, and they serve very different purposes.
Chile uses its fund to cushion fiscal shocks. Norway saves wealth for future generations. Indonesia emphasizes development and diversification. Nigeria separates stabilization, infrastructure, and future generations into distinct funds. There is no one-size-fits-all model.
As mandates broaden, clear objectives and legal structures built to match them help countries protect public wealth and answer for how they use it.

| 3 | 🇬🇷 *Greece’s Tax Reforms Have Shown Results*
Greece’s VAT collection has risen from about 7% of GDP in 2010 to around 9.5% in 2025, reflecting years of work to strengthen tax administration and improve compliance.
This progress did not happen overnight. Greece first stabilized revenue collection, then built a more independent tax authority, and later expanded digital tools such as electronic invoicing and point-of-sale connectivity. Together, these reforms made it easier to comply, strengthened enforcement, and helped put public finances on a stronger footing.

| 5 | AI is reshaping finance, but it could also reshape financial crises.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming trading, lending, market infrastructure, and financial supervision. The technology promises greater efficiency, better risk assessment, and more effective oversight. Yet it may also make markets faster, more interconnected, and more vulnerable to systemic shocks.
In a new blog, Tobias Adrian examines how central banks and financial regulators can harness AI's benefits while containing its risks through stronger oversight, better data, enhanced resilience, and closer international cooperation. The goal is not to slow innovation, but to ensure it supports a safer and more stable financial system.

| 17 | 🏥 *When Aid Falls, Essential Services Feel the Impact*
More than half of aid to sub-Saharan Africa helps support vital services, including health, education, and humanitarian assistance. As funding declines, protecting these services becomes harder, especially in countries already facing tight budgets and limited financing options.
There are no easy fixes. Countries will need to make careful choices about where scarce resources have the greatest impact, while finding new sources of financing and strengthening domestic revenue and spending systems. The way countries adapt will be critical to protecting development gains and supporting future growth.
