🫣 Four people allege that actor and drag star Shangela either sexually assaulted them or attempted to have sex with them when they were too inebriated to consent. In a Rolling Stone article published Monday, the five accusers recount incidents in which Darius Jeremy Pierce, the man behind drag queen Shangela allegedly sexually abused individuals or attempted to intoxicate them to the point that they lost the ability to give consent to a sexual act. All five told the magazine that they spoke out after HBO production assistant Daniel McGarrigle filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court accusing Pierce of drugging and raping him after a 2020 wrap party; The case was settled in mediation after a judge dismissed two of the charges. Pierce vehemently denied the allegation, saying it has "no basis in fact or law." Many of the new allegations against Pierce in the Rolling Stone story have similar details to McGarrigle and each other — nearly all of the accounts involve Pierce allegedly buying or supplying alcohol to the young men, ages 18 to 23 at the time they said the abuse occurred; several memories include the men waking up in Pierce's bed dazed and confused and there are several accounts of a third man present in the room. According to the report, several of the accusers who brought charges against Pierce were hesitant to do so, as it could be a blow to the drag community. As the once-underground scene has become mainstream, with shows like Drag Race and We're Here finding a wider audience, family-friendly events like drag brunches and story time have been targeted by right-wing action groups. Speaking to the magazine, Checri said he felt "it's a great relief that finally this conversation is starting to happen."
