The Raincoats – The Raincoats Rough Trade, 1979 #albumweek What an incredible concoction of originality. This album inspires me to no end. I like to imagine these players forming the songs together. I do know that the origins of certain songs can be credited to certain members but I assume there was collaboration in developing the tunes. The songs aren’t searching-which would be a fine quality-but are fully formed adults saying exactly what they set out to say. The record uses so many different sounds and methods, yet it all sounds like The Raincoats and nothing else sounds like The Raincoats. The songs are catchy and memorable. Honest and sad. Harsh and worried. Loving and up front. I love the sudden changes and wonderful harmonies herein. (C) Emily Robb

Ry Cooder – Paris, Texas (Soundtrack) Warner Bros., 1985 #albumweek My friend Max gave me this on cassette a while ago and I’m surprised and overjoyed to report that the cassette’s (physically) still got life. That piece of plastic has turned and turned inside my tape deck and then turned some more. The music really knows how to pull on my heartstrings. Not to mention we get to hear Harry Dean Stanton sing on Ry Cooder’s beautifully arranged “Canción Mixteca.” This music turned me back on to playing acoustic guitar. Cooder’s slide playing feels more western than bluesy. Starkness is the name of the game - he lets powerful chords ring out in a lot of space. He lets simple themes ring out in a lot of space. It’s like watching Travis walk through the desert. There’s a lotta space to feeeeeeel. (C) Emily Robb

Irma Thomas – Sings Bandy, 1979 #albumweek This is an absolutely beautiful compilation of early Irma Thomas recordings. It’s got heavy hitters like “It’s Raining” and “Cry On” and “I Wish Someone Would Care”. Those are my favorites, at least. Her voice is incredible, she doesn’t yell and scream much or growl and rasp. She just has an undeniably soulful way and doesn’t need such devices. Some of the mixes are odd, they’re all mostly as minimal as appropriate. This one I don’t listen to often but when I do, it takes me over. (C) Emily Robb

Albert Ayler Quintet – Spirits Rejoice ESP Disk, 1965 Should my “favorite albums of all times” list ever exist, this album will be on it. The method employed speaks to me dearly - these monsters of jazz bring, of course, their mastery of learned jazz but with such willingness to seriously play around with the performance. It’s a live album, recorded with no audience but live nonetheless. There are prearranged sections (or maybe the whole thing is prearranged) and pre-written (catchy!) melodies played clear as day. But there is an incredibly loose and unconventional rolling out of sentences. Each player is defiantly individualistic and it’s all celebrated. It’s on the edge. I don’t mean the edge of control, but the edge of fear and love. (C) Emily Robb

Harold Budd – The Pavilion Of Dreams Obscure, 1978 #albumweek This is one of those albums that gently takes my hand and brings me through a door to someplace I’ve absolutely never been and when inside, I wonder new things about life and the human experience. The second and third songs have a lone voice so wise, so expressive and observant all at the same time. A beautiful record - it’s magical without the cuteness that word tends to conjure these days. Mirrors – Something That Would Never Do Violet Times, 2009 #albumweek A compilation of stupendous songs by this once overlooked Cleveland band. Every song on the album is a hit. Not to take away from their inventiveness - you’ll find no rampaging with droning noises or studio experimentation testing the audience’s patience - these songs have verses, choruses, bridges, hooks, melodies, harmonies and lyrics. Whilst I grapple with my feelings about the validity (or lack thereof) of the rock “song” in today’s world, I can’t get enough of these 50 year old songs. (C) Emily Robb
