Discuss both views and give your opinion Gun ownership is a topic that often ignites sharp debates, with some advocating for its legalization and others opposing it. Personally, despite admitting that firearms can be used for self-protection, I still believe that individuals must not be allowed to carry guns as it can potentially result in increased crime and lethal incidents. On the one hand, the most frequently cited argument for gun ownership is personal defense. With crime rates in some cities increasing at an alarming rate, some individuals might want to possess a firearm to ensure personal safety. In fact, when criminals are aware that a certain person, family or even store may have a weapon, they will be reluctant to commit a crime. Many American movies perfectly showcase this situation, in which a shop owner protects his shop with a shotgun, ensuring that no other perpetrators attempt to rob the store again. On the other hand, others contend that gun ownership may increase the crime rates, too. That is because the amount of anger and rage among society is on the rise day by day, and people, consciously or not, may turn to a weapon in order to resolve their problems. In addition, despite several checking procedures undertaken before permitting someone to carry a gun, firearms still somehow fall into the hands of many mentally instable as well as under age. These segments of population are not renowned with the best self-control, and in some extreme cases can deploy guns for aggression, not defense. This can be exemplified by numerous shootings and massacres in American schools, which are not infrequent because it is so easy to get a gun there. Having discussed both sides, I believe that, more often than not, weapons are being used for attacking purposes, not defending. Even people who initially buy a firearm for safety reasons may later lose control and kill or injure others. If some individuals are indeed concerned about their personal security, they can buy less serious things like electric shocker or pepper spray, which perform the same function but impose less danger to a human life. To conclude, the supporters of the firearm policy claim that it is essential for protecting oneself, especially in cities with high crime rates. However, critics argue that gun ownership may entail a growth in crime rates, potentially threatening a human life. In my view, no country should legalize carrying weapons because those seeking self-protective tools can get something less dangerous, too.
