Instability in the Collision of Two Vortex Rings 🌀
When an instability brings vortex filaments of opposite circulation together, these filaments can rejoin in a process called reconnection. This process is particularly interesting as it leads to major changes in the flows’ topology.
This video shows a special type of instability: from a specific Reynolds number, the collision of two vortex rings leads to a turbulent cloud, which can sometimes form smaller rings due to the reconnection process.
Numerical simulation is a great tool to study complex fluid dynamics phenomena such as the formation of instabilities.
