The Dying Reefs of Vanuatu and the Fight for Climate Justice Once a diver’s paradise, the coral reefs of Vanuatu’s Havannah Harbour now lie in ruins. John Warmington, a veteran diver, recalls swimming through vibrant underwater forests alive with staghorn and plate corals. Today, those same reefs are a ghostly graveyard—bleached, broken, and devastated by repeated cyclones, predatory starfish outbreaks, and a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake. But the damage doesn’t stop at the shoreline. On land, climate change has torn through every aspect of life. Children study under makeshift tents—temporary classrooms dismantled each time a storm hits. Farmers like Kaltang Laban struggle to coax crops like cassava and taro from soils rendered infertile by saltwater intrusion and shifting weather patterns. With over 70% of Vanuatu’s population dependent on subsistence farming, the very survival of the island nation hangs in the balance. Yet, Vanuatu is not remaining silent. Refusing to accept its fate as a passive victim, the country has emerged as a moral leader in the global climate justice movement. Spearheading a coalition of over 130 countries, Vanuatu has brought a historic case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking legal accountability from major polluting nations. While the court’s verdict will be non-binding, its implications could reshape international climate law and establish new norms of environmental responsibility. For Vanuatu, this is not a matter of politics. It is a plea—for justice, for dignity, and ultimately, for the right to exist.

Tommy Garnett and Sierra Leone’s Green Legacy Sierra Leone’s history has been marked by conflict, particularly during its devastating civil war, when environmental destruction became another casualty of violence. Amid this turmoil, Tommy Garnett—born in 1959 in the rural Kono district—emerged as a visionary conservationist. In 1992, at the height of internal strife, he founded the Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA), an organization that would become a lifeline for the country’s ravaged ecosystems. Garnett’s approach was revolutionary: rather than imposing conservation from the outside, he integrated local communities into environmental restoration. His work on Tiwai Island, a once-thriving biodiversity hotspot devastated by war and logging, exemplified this philosophy. Through eco-tourism, community training, and sustainable livelihood programs, he transformed forest protection into a shared mission. His efforts not only safeguarded endangered species but also led to the planting of over 2 million trees. The legacy of Garnett’s dedication was cemented in 2025, when the Gola-Tiwai Complex—nurtured by decades of grassroots conservation—was declared Sierra Leone’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. For a nation still healing from its past, this recognition was more than an environmental milestone; it was a symbol of redemption and resilience. Today, Sierra Leone’s forests and mountains stand as a testament to what can be achieved when communities and conservationists unite—proving that even after war, nature can flourish again.
