The two officers landed about five miles apart. One was rescued within hours, while the other remained in Iran for roughly two days despite suffering a broken back, arm and shoulder after his damaged parachute caused a hard landing. He climbed a 7,000-foot ridgeline before U.S. forces reached him.
The U.S. military said more than 90 service members entered Iran during the second rescue operation, while U.S. aircraft struck Iranian forces near the area. Two rescue aircraft and several helicopters were later destroyed after becoming stranded to prevent them from falling into Iranian hands.
