Why Ken Saro-Wiwa was Executed by Sani Abacha’s Military Regime
On November 10, 1995, a tragic event shook the nation of Nigeria and sent shockwaves around the world. Author and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight men from the Ogoni community in Niger Delta were unlawfully executed by the Abacha-led military dictatorship.
Saro-Wiwa’s death, along with that of eight other activists in the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), catapulted the Ogoni plight to global awareness. The Ogoni Nine, as they became known, were victims of an alleged conspiracy between Shell Oil and the Nigerian military dictatorship headed by General Sani Abacha to silence MOSOP and Saro-Wiwa.
At the time, Ken Saro-will had become one of the most vocal critics of oil exploitation in Nigeria and the environmental costs to the Ogoni people...

"Niger is the world’s fifth-largest uranium producer.
In 2021, it provided the European Union with nearly 25 percent of its uranium supplies, which helped produce electricity for millions of households.
The French nuclear company – formerly, Areva and now Orano – started mining the country’s uranium reserves in the 1970s. Forty-seven years later, in March 2021, the Cominak mines near the northern town of Arlit closed down.
The closure left the local population to live with 20 million tonnes of radioactive mud on the mine’s site, according to the French-based Independent Research and Information Commission on Radioactivity (CRIIRAD).
Its findings, following an investigation of the area in 2009, showed that the level of radioactivity was 450,000 Becquerels per kilo - well above the internationally recommended levels of radiation."

Kenya’s president has firmly denounced the coup in Niger - likening its leaders to colonial-era masters for their undemocratic ways.
Speaking during a visit to Mozambique, William Ruto also made clear that he would back any action the ECOWAS bloc of nations might take - including an intervention to restore the pre-coup order in Niger. He expressed his view that ECOWAS was fundamental to the regional African architecture - while also insisting any African nation that tolerates a coup can’t belong to the African Union.
