THE ROOT OF SIN: UNDERSTANDING SELF AND THE BATTLE OF HUMAN APPETITES — APOSTLE AROME OSAYI Every sin committed by human beings can be traced to one central issue—self. After the fall of man, the human soul became naturally inclined toward self-interest, personal satisfaction, and pride. This fallen orientation causes people to prioritize their own desires above the will of God. Understanding this truth helps believers recognize how sin operates through human appetites and why spiritual transformation through God’s Word is necessary for victory. 🔹 The Root of Sin is Self: Sin originates from self-centeredness. After the fall of man, the human soul became focused on personal satisfaction, pride, and personal gain. When self becomes the center of life, a person easily drifts away from the will of God. 🔹 Self Drives Many Wrong Desires: Many sinful actions are motivated by the desire to gratify self. For example, someone may pursue a relationship not out of love or purpose, but to satisfy pride or prove something to others. The real pursuit becomes self-glory rather than righteousness. 🔹 The Fallen Nature Promotes Self-Gratification: The fallen human nature constantly pushes a person to seek personal pleasure and recognition above God’s will. As long as self remains at the center of life, a person will remain vulnerable to sin. 🔹 Natural Appetites Are Not Evil: Human beings were created with natural appetites such as sleep, sexual desire, and the desire to see or explore. These appetites are not sinful by themselves because they were designed by God. 🔹 Sin Manipulates Natural Appetites: In the fallen condition of man, sin takes advantage of these natural desires. For example, when God calls someone to pray, the desire for sleep may suddenly become overwhelming, leading to disobedience. 🔹 Sexual Desire Within Boundaries: Sexual desire is a natural appetite created by God, but when it is expressed outside the boundaries designed by God, it becomes a doorway to sin and spiritual bondage. 🔹 The Danger of Uncontrolled Visual Appetite: Even the desire to see can be manipulated. Curiosity can gradually lead to harmful habits where what begins as simple interest can turn into bondage. 🔹 Victory Comes Through God’s Word: Freedom from these struggles requires spiritual transformation. Feeding consistently on the Word of God strengthens the spirit and helps a believer remain grounded in God’s will. 🔹 The Path to Freedom: Spiritual growth, discipline, and constant exposure to God’s Word are essential in overcoming sinful patterns and living a life aligned with God’s purpose.
