| 19 | Nifty’s Price-to-Book (P/B) ratio is at a 6-year low.
Sounds like the market is cheap, right?
Not so fast.
The headline number hides a few important details:
→ Banks have ~35% weight in the Nifty. Retained profits increased their book value faster than share prices, mechanically pushing P/B lower.
→ Since September 2023, NSE shifted from standalone to consolidated financials for Nifty P/B calculations.
This also brought the reported ratio down.
→ A low P/B doesn’t automatically mean an undervalued market.
Why?
Because P/B tells you what you’re paying relative to book value, but not the quality of that business.
A company with low P/B and poor ROE may be less attractive than one with a higher P/B but strong profitability and efficient use of capital.
So before calling the Nifty “cheap”, look beyond one number.
Think:
→ Profitability
→ ROE
→ Business quality
→ Earnings cycle
→ Valuation
