Great example of downward elbows, maintaining control and how effective downward elbows can be. When utilizing downward elbows (or any strike) on top like this, you want to make sure you always maintain dominant position before striking. Don’t get greedy. The goal is to be able to switch flawlessly between maintaining position and knowing when to strike. Make your strikes count! The more wild and off balance you are due to your striking, the easier it is for your opponent to escape from underneath you. Position > Striking

Great example of downward elbows and how fast & effectively they can break down an opponent. Downward elbows are also great while fighting for positioning or scrambling on the ground (above) as they hurt when you connect anywhere on the body. A lot. So even if it’s not a fight ending elbow strike (leg, shoulder, etc.) it most certainly will make your opponent move or try to block your next elbow. If you get your opponent to move to escape the “next “ elbow, this is where you need to switch to capitalizing on position before striking again. Don’t get greedy. If you maintain the balance of elbows/dominant position, you can basically destroy your opponent (above).

Laziness The main thing I want everyone to take away from this video is, this is what happens when you get lazy/predictable with your positioning. Being lazy puts you in a bad position and bad position loses fights. In 12 seconds the same exact reactionary positioning was applied 5 times, in a row, to the same threat (encroachment). By stepping straight back, but remaining just outside the pocket, the position of red shorts became predictable. So much so, that all the opponent had to do was place his kick correctly. By the 5th time, red shorts literally ran into the kick. This is why knowledge of position, the pocket and staying disciplined are just as important as proper strikes. This is also why drilling correctly is vital to your success. If you only step in and out when drilling, guess what? When you spar/fight you will only be comfortable stepping in and out. This notion applies to both defense and striking. You will fight how you drill. You will not magically turn it on later when the time comes.

Standing still leads to getting flat footed. Getting flat footed leads to getting stood up. Getting stood up is (usually) game over. Avoid this by constantly moving and always looking for the better position.
