I am 26 with no money in my 401k or stocks, how bad is this? Can I bounce back or too late?
zingdr24 @ GrubHub
So I am currently 26 and over the weekend have realized I am an idiot.
I introduced myself to this app and Reddit finance subreddits, and am questioning how much money I have lost and how far behind I am.
I got into tech industry 2 years ago as a SWE, and was just living check to check and putting rest in my savings. I live in Chicago as HCOL.
I want to bounce back, but realize I may be too late in terms of the top level gains some people have here but want at-least be stable. I know I have given up a lot of money.
How do I change my life around financially, and how should I change my allocations to be financially successful at 35 - 40? Open to all advice.

Refusing OpenAI offer: stupid?
yIAW85 @ Google
L6, SWE, non-ML, in a supportive organization doing a solid amount of work but nothing too crazy. Not overly attached to my role, I understand Google can reorg me and/or lay me off anytime.
I have an offer from OpenAI, research organization, infra SWE role, for a 3X multiple of my current comp (clearly a lot of it is paper money, so not exactly a fair comparison).
I am thinking of not pursuing it. I realized I probably made a mistake in applying to the company and I didn’t think things through. I assumed in the lucky event of getting an offer I would have accepted it without hesitation, but once I faced the actual decision it turned out more complicated.
I had a good experience with the interview process and the people I talked there, but as I seriously contemplated the offer for the past few days I realized the most important aspect is WLB. I like having time every day to read, working out, cultivate the relationship with my partner, travel 3 times a year internationally to visit my aging parents, 2+ vacations, and I am not getting any younger at 37. In this job I would have to commute long hours to SF from the South Bay, work much longer and likely be stressed all the time.
I am trying to understand if this is a flight-not-fight reaction mostly driven by fear, but I don’t think so. If I close my eyes and I imagine my life in this new job, no excitement comes out of it. Just the insane amount of time wasted on Caltrain and the weekends burned working. In fact, this whole process made me realize that my time might also be wasted at Google and that I might want to quit soon and take an extended and possibly permanent break, I just need to find something to “retire” to, something to keep me busy just a few hours a day to live a balanced and relaxed life.
My financial situation is fairly stable, I have $5M in Vanguard index funds (mostly VTI/VXUS and some treasuries) and my after tax yearly expenses are about $60k (I do not have kids). No debt. Immigrant now naturalized US citizen. EU citizen as well.
Thoughts?

NVIDIA Employee Badge saved me from a speeding ticket
speeder309 @ NVIDIA
Got pulled over for going 95mph on the highway the other day. Asked to flash my driver’s ID.
Was annoyed that this low-prestige police officer (which company do police even WORK for?) dared to pull ME, an NVIDIA employee, over.
So instead of my driver’s license, I brandished my NVIDIA employee ID as a statement.
As if to say: “I work at NVIDIA, lil punk. Yeah That’s right. Where do YOU work?”
Promptly received a bashful apology and was let go, amidst a look of utter, absolute awe from the officer.
“Oh my god… you’re an NVIDIA employee? Today’s marks my luckiest day on the job, after 25 years!”
No ticket, no fine, nothing.
I drove off feeling like the Queen of England.
NEVER underestimate the power of tech.
We are ALL prestigious stars here on blind.

Anyone regret having 2 kids instead of 1?
EIhk74 @ Google
We have 1 kid. Anyone regret having a second kid and wish they would have stuck with just 1 kid? I can’t envision how much work it truly will add to day to day life to have a second. With 1 kid, it’s easier to work in shifts and have some personal time. #parenting #workingparent

How many of you NVIDIA employees have paid off your mortgages thus far?
allinfan @ Google
Even if you just got a $200K new hire RSU grant in 2019, it's worth $4M now. For higher level employees, obviously you are set for life and probably don't have to work anymore. Man if it were me I'd pay off all my loans and be debt free and just work for fun.

For people who think California is a high tax state
DbMc27 @ Palo Alto Networks
I just did my parent's 2023 tax returns. Their 2023 CA income tax liability is $387 on a gross income of ~110k, making their effective state tax rate 0.36%.
Math:
110k gross (mostly from IRA withdrawals, investments, and social security) - 40k social security income which is not state taxable - 5k treasury bond/ETF dividends which is not state taxable - ~11k CA standard deduction = 54k of California taxable income. This calculates to be about $963 tax, then subtract 2x $288 personal exemption = $387. They also don't work so they pay no CASDI.
They own their home and are on Medicare so the two biggest life expenses are taken care of. 110k is plenty for them to enjoy Bay Area retiree life.

Put on PIP when I shared I’m pregnant
amazon8678 @ Amazon
In December, I informed my manager about my pregnancy, and during the same conversation, I was advised to consider resigning due to potential stress during the PIP process. Despite this, I chose to proceed with focus plan, where I performed well on the two projects I was given. But I did have one miss out that caught my manager’s attention. Recently, I expressed the stress that I'm facing and my intention to take a leave of absence, but my manager suggested to wait till he talks to HR. Today he came back to me saying that I am being put on pivot because I had one big miss out and I should consider taking severance and leave. I told him that I want to take leave of absence but he wants me to take severance and leave so that he can backfill my position. I sought his approval for a leave of absence, aiming to maintain a positive relationship and not ending in bad terms. I know I acted stupid but I did not want to shock him by taking leave of absence all of a sudden. He said let’s meet early next week to discuss the options. I want to take leave of absence as it is my right for taking it for prenatal care. How can I emphasize the importance of prenatal care by taking leave of absence over leaving with severance? I just do not want to end this in bad terms by offending anybody. Or should I just leave?
Can I negotiate my severance?

Is it a good idea to move Canada?
hdkg @ AMD
Hi, After student visa new rules announced by IRCC, I am in a split situation.
My plan was to do a post graduate for a year, work for year. And then apply for PR.
Lately people have not been getting jobs for 6-7 months. So if I get a year long work permit, then who will even offer job for rest of 5-6 months?
Also employer sponsored work permits are expensive and it is my understanding that only small scale companies do that. Is that accurate information?
As of today, is it a good choice to go for one year post graduate course? I do not have funds to go for second year.
As of today CRS score is 410
