Co-signatory Professor Angus Dalgleish, emeritus professor of oncology at St George's, University of London, also gave evidence at the hearing. Dr Malhotra raised concerns about vaccine safety and what he believes is the influence of powerful drug companies over medical research, regulators and government health policy. The letter says its authors are not asking the Prime Minister to accept their conclusions about Covid vaccines. Instead, they want him to ensure the evidence is independently investigated. It says: "We are not asking you to accept the conclusions. We are asking you to ensure that the evidence is examined. That distinction matters." The letter says such an intervention is particularly pointed because of Mr Burnham's record of campaigning against institutional failures and cover-ups. It points to scandals including Hillsborough, infected blood and the Post Office, where victims fought for years to have their concerns taken seriously. Its authors warn that the same mistake must not be made over Covid vaccines. They are calling for an independent review of vaccine safety, including possible cardiovascular harms.
