Patients undergoing Medical Treatments (Medication-Induced) Many modern medical treatments intentionally or unintentionally suppress the immune system: • Chemotherapy patients: Cancer treatments target rapidly dividing cells, which includes the white blood cells responsible for fighting infection. • Organ transplant recipients: Patients who have received a kidney, liver, heart, or other organ must take lifelong immunosuppressant drugs to prevent their body from rejecting the organ. • Bone marrow or stem cell transplant recipients: These patients have their entire immune system wiped out before receiving new cells, leaving them severely vulnerable for months. • Long-term corticosteroid users: Patients taking high doses of prednisone or similar steroids for chronic inflammation, asthma, or severe allergies. • Biologic therapy patients: People taking advanced medications (like TNF-inhibitors) for severe autoimmune diseases. 2. Patients with Chronic or Underlying Diseases Certain diseases naturally weaken the body's defenses over time: • People living with HIV/AIDS: Specifically those with low CD4 cell counts or advanced/untreated HIV, which directly destroys crucial immune cells. • People with hematologic (blood) cancers: Leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma directly affect the bone marrow and white blood cells, rendering them non-functional. • People with advanced Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Uremia (the buildup of toxins in the blood) impairs the function of immune cells. • Uncontrolled Diabetics: High blood sugar levels can impair the function of white blood cells and weaken the body's healing response. 3. Patients with Autoimmune Conditions In these cases, the immune system is dysfunctional—it is hyperactive against the body's own tissues, but often sluggish or ineffective at fighting off actual external pathogens (a vulnerability compounded by the medications used to treat them): • Severe Rheumatoid ArthritisSystemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative ColitisMultiple Sclerosis (MS) 4. Patients with Anatomical or Genetic Vulnerabilities Asplenic patients (No spleen): People who have had their spleen surgically removed (splenectomy) or have a non-functioning spleen (e.g., due to Sickle Cell Anemia). The spleen is critical for filtering blood and fighting certain bacterial infections. • Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PIDs): Rare, genetic conditions where a person is born missing parts of their immune system (e.g., Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID)).
