The battle against Central Bank Digital Currencies has just taken an important step in the right direction… Buried inside the newly approved U.S. housing bill is a provision that legally prohibits the Federal Reserve from issuing a CBDC until the end of 2030. It is not a permanent ban, and that is an important distinction. Some lawmakers fought to make it permanent, but a temporary moratorium was ultimately the compromise needed to get the wider legislation passed. Even so, this is significant. President Trump has already signed an Executive Order opposing a U.S. CBDC, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has publicly rejected the idea, and many lawmakers continue to warn that a government controlled digital currency would become one of the greatest surveillance and control tools ever created. The fight is far from over, but for now the United States has both an Executive Order and a statutory restriction standing in the way of a CBDC. Perhaps the biggest story, however, has received almost no attention. The same bill also restricts large institutional investors from continuing to buy up America’s single family homes, a practice that has priced countless ordinary families out of the housing market.
