The first black hole wasn’t discovered until X-ray astronomy was used. Cygnus X-1 was first found during balloon flights in the 1960s, but wasn’t identified as a black hole for about another decade. According to NASA, the black hole is 10 times more massive to the Sun. Nearby is a blue supergiant star that is about 20 times more massive than the Sun, which is bleeding due to the black hole and creating X-ray emissions.

Extreme Pulsars Could Be Spitting Out Way More Radiation Than We Thought Radio pulsars could be spitting way more powerful bursts of radiation into space than we knew. According to a new survey of the Crab pulsar some 6,500 light-years away, a type of event known as "giant radio pulses" are accompanied by an increase in X-ray emission. This means that these events are much more energetic than we thought; it also has implications for understanding the mysterious fast radio bursts (FRBs) that flare at Earth from millions of light-years away, across intergalactic space.
