On the day of Ashura, this elderly companion rode into battle with the strength of a young man. Every strike of his sword declared his love for Hussain (a). Surrounded by enemies from every side, Habib continued to defend the grandson of Rasulullah (s). Then the moment came when Habib was struck down. He fell from his horse onto the burning sands of Karbala. Dust covered his face, and blood flowed from his wounds. It is narrated that Imam Hussain (a) rushed towards him. Imagine the grief of the Imam. This was not merely a companion; this was a lifelong friend, a supporter of his father Ali (a), a man who had answered the call of Karbala despite his old age. Hussain (a) reached Habib and saw him in his final moments. Habib looked towards his Imam one last time. What comfort must have entered his heart when he saw the face of Hussain beside him? As Habib departed from this world, Imam Hussain (a) was left alone with one fewer loyal companion. The tents of the Ahlul Bayt had lost another protector. The cries of grief rose from the camp as the standard-bearers of loyalty were falling one after another.
