INTRODUCTION: over the years, many students preparing for the wassce
have neglected the areas which will earn them better scores in the english
language paper. These areas are the pillars or the back bone to the
students who intend passing his exam. Namely Summary, comprehension
and continous/letter writing
Summary writing by candidates at wassce has become terrible
nowadays.Majority candidates get low marks because they do not have the
know how to answer summary questions. This is as result of the following;
(a) Lack of understanding the given passage by the students or
candidates.It is difficult to answer questions or passages if you do not
understand what the passage are about. Summary writing can be done
correcting if you widely read with understnading to broaden your
knowledge.
(b) Lack of adequate of stock vocabulary in the candidate's memories. The
candidates needs to have strong vocabulary content by knowing many
words.Reading extensively different types of literatures will increases the
candidate's vocabulary.
(c) Grammatical errors in the presentation of the final answers are another
cause to poor summary writing. Examiners do not focus attention to main
points or ideas in the passage but also to grammatical mistakes like
spelling, use of punctuations, capitalisation, tense aspect,concord
appropriate use of prepositions
