- Doublets consist of two independent earthquakes of similar magnitude that originate from distinct but closely related ruptures in quick succession.
Causes and High Destructiveness
1. Tectonic Location: Boundary between the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates. The disaster was caused by shallow strike-slip faulting, where these two plates slide horizontally past one another.
2. Why it Was So Devastating:
2.1 Shallow Depth: The mainshock occurred at a shallow depth of about 10 km.
2.2 Compounded Damage: Because the two major shocks happened seconds apart, buildings weakened by the first quake were immediately subjected to another violent shaking. This drastically increased the risk of total collapse and heavily complicated rescue efforts.

- 1988 (Australia): A rare "triplet"—three major earthquakes occurring within just half an hour of each other.
