Process of ICSI-IVF
1. Ovarian Stimulation: Similar to traditional IVF, the female partner undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs.
2. Egg Retrieval: Eggs are collected from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure.
3. Sperm Collection: Sperm is obtained either through ejaculation or surgical extraction in cases of severe male infertility.
4. Sperm Injection: A single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of each mature egg using a fine needle.
5. Fertilization and Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs are monitored for development and cultured in the laboratory for a few days.
6. Embryo Transfer: One or more healthy embryos are transferred to the female partner’s uterus with the aim of achieving pregnancy.
Indications for ICSI
- Low Sperm Count: Severe oligospermia or azoospermia (no sperm in ejaculate).
- Poor Sperm Motility or Morphology: Sperm that are unable to swim effectively or have abnormal shapes.
- Previous IVF Failures: Especially if fertilization issues were identified.
- Male Genetic Disorders: To ensure the injection of a single healthy sperm.
- Obstructive Causes: Such as vasectomy or congenital absence of the vas deferens.
Success Rates and Considerations
- Success rates of ICSI are comparable to conventional IVF for many couples, but the method can significantly improve chances in cases of severe male infertility.
- Risks and considerations include the potential for multiple pregnancies and the need for careful monitoring during ovarian stimulation to avoid ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
