| 10 | Authentic Christian Ministry
What does an authentic ministry for Christ look like? How do we know, as Christians, that we are performing an acceptable work for God's cause? Paul gives us hints in different ways throughout 2 Corinthians 3-7. When people genuinely work for Christ, lives are transformed (2 Corinthians 3:2), and they become willing to suffer in the course of their missionary work (2 Corinthians 4:8), even to the point of facing persecution and death (2 Corinthians 9-11).
An authentic Christian ministry is gospel-focused (2 Corinthians 5:16, 17) in such a way that there is no room for "peddling the word of God" (2 Corinthians 2:17). Rather, Paul was willing to die for the sake of others, just as Jesus did (2 Corinthians 4:10).1 Genuine missionary work must reflect the selfless, humble, and servant-rooted ministry of Jesus in one's own life.

We saw above that Paul endured such overwhelming suffering that he described it as "beyond measure" (2 Corinthians 1:8). Yet, he remained confident that God was the source of his strength and encouragement. Empowered by this divine comfort, he became a channel of encouragement to others. By being willing to suffer for his church members, he demonstrates his love for them.
Paul's deep affection for the Corinthians was evident in his readiness to endure hardship for their sake and in the genuine and transparent way he served them. His love for the church in Corinth manifested itself even in the fact that he changed his travel plans. Initially, he intended to visit Corinth soon after sending Timothy, but a bad report from Timothy caused him to change his plans. Instead of another painful visit, Paul sent a heartfelt, tearful letter expressing deep love. Delivered by Titus, this "severe letter" led to the Corinthians' repentance. Paul forgives the church for how they were treating him and for misinterpreting his intentions. This becomes a pattern to be followed by the church in dealing with a case of sin. Church discipline must be applied with love, prayer, and a willingness to forgive the offender, seeking restoration.
Despite the situation's happy ending, Paul is sure that his victories are not the result of his efforts. He emphasizes that all triumphs come from God, not from human endeavors. This applies to everything in life!
