📰 Apple car to run neural processors, AI for full autonomy Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple is now aiming to unveil a fully autonomous vehicle in 2025 - one without a steering wheel or pedals - following the SAE Level 5 definition for full driving automation. The report, based on comments by unnamed sources, says Apple has now finished much of the core work on a processor that will go in the first generation of the car. That car chip design and updated self-driving sensors will be used in retrofitted cars that have already been tested in California, the report added. The chip is made of neural processors that use artificial intelligence required for autonomous driving, which means it will run hot and require a cooling system, according to Bloomberg. 🎛 Cytron Maker HAT Base Review: Low Cost Electronics Lab Cytron’s $10 Maker HAT Base is a GPIO breakout board for all models of Raspberry Pi with 40 GPIO pins and it is a small electronics lab for use with HATs / pHAT. With a HAT connected, we still have access to the female GPIO header, located center right of the board. Using this header we can connect other electronics for use in conjunction with the Maker HAT Base. For example an HC-SR04P ultrasonic sensor with a motor controller would create a motion triggered kinetic sculpture, or be used as the “eyes” of a simple robot. Another use case for the extra GPIO header is a little GPIO hacking. We can tap into the pins to understand how a HAT is using them or we can hack the pins to perform other duties. This use case requires a little more knowledge and equipment than a typical home hobbyist has, but it is there if we need it. Program in C, avoid Python, Perl A team of Portuguese university researchers attempted to quantify the energy efficiency of different programming languages in a paper entitled Energy Efficiency across Programming Languages, where they looked at the runtime, memory usage, and energy consumption of twenty-seven well-known programming languages. To the surprise of no one, the study concludes that “compiled languages tend to be, as expected, the fastest and most energy-efficient ones”. C and C++ languages are the most efficient and fastest languages. Go is the worst language from the compiled languages category, and it’s even worse than languages relying on a VM like Java or Erlang, at least with the binary-trees sample used. #articles #programming

🎚 Raspberry PI Zero 2W: What does the silicon contain? Author of the article used special tools and chemicals for having a closer look at how new Raspberry board is built. It's not just a single integrated circuit, but rather 3 pieces of silicon and a bunch of gold wires which tied everything together. Looks like developers have moved away from Package-on-package and have gone for the even more sophisticated multi-chip packaging. In this technique they take the substrate (basically a circuit board with super fine traces), then they put down the DRAM, a spacer... which is simply a bit of un-etched silicon, and then the SOC. It's all connected together with gold bond wires and encapsulated in epxoy. Advantages of this is cost, the package is often as expensive as the silicon it contains. They have gone down from two packages used on the "Pi zero" where they stacked the DRAM on top of the SOC to one. #articles #boards

🖐🏻 Tactile Sensing Gets a Boost for AI Systems Thanks to Open-source Research The new announcement from Meta this week was ReSkin, a new open-source tactile sensing "skin" solution. ReSkin is a deformable elastomer designed with embedded magnetic particles. According to the publication, when this material deforms, it causes a change in its magnetic field, which is perceptible by nearby magnetometers. The system then uses AI-based techniques to interpret this data into relevant information such as contact location and applied force. All together, ReSkin comes out to be 2-3 mm thick, has a lifetime of over 50,000 interactions, has a temporal resolution of up to 400 Hz, and has a spatial resolution of 1 mm with 90% accuracy. ReSkin offers several unique value propositions. First off, unlike other skin-based sensors, ReSkin is generalizable thanks to a novel self-supervised learning algorithm that allows the sensors to auto-calibrate without manual intervention. #articles #sensors #news

Briefly CO₂ levels measure the amount of human breath in your vicinity, which is a reasonable proxy for the number of particles of an infectious airborne pathogen potentially in your vicinity. There are some caveats, mostly related to indoor air filtration systems which can potentially remove (very small) virus particles but not (much smaller) CO₂ molecules, but it's still a reasonably interesting parameter to monitor when you're in a new or unusual setting. This was despite delays in commissioning and the postponing of projects as a result of the pandemic. Looking further ahead, robust and exponential growth is forecast, even when you take into account a lowering in Interact Analysis’ short-term projections. Mor than 2 million mobile robots are due to ship by the end of 2025. Here are some of the results of the research: ▫️ Nearly 60,000 mobile robots shipped in 2020 – an increase of over 25% on 2019. ▫️ Revenues to reach $18 billion by 2025, despite a lowered short-term forecast. The research shows that, by the end of 2025, nearly 2.1 million mobile robots will have been shipped – with almost 860,000 of these accounted for in 2025 alone.
