Extra, by Romeu (mtg.cardsrealm.com):
- Legacy might be a safe home for Fantasticar: Consign to Memory is the most played Sideboard card, but just like Ravager Shops, archetypes that are already strong and competitive in the Metagame gained an alternative and low‑cost win condition to access in decks with free spells and mana accelerators like Dark Ritual, though not limited to them. Colorless Stompy, 8‑Cast, and others could find ways to take advantage of it.
If that happens, more answers like Abrade will be needed in Sideboards, but they are linear depending on the archetype, becoming efficient against this line but a dead card when Storm is going off or Doomsday has started its piles.
The survival of The Fantasticar in Legacy may depend on how much Consign to Memory serves as a safety valve in sideboards and how many archetypes end up adding it to their lists. If the number of decks running it grows, a ban would be plausible due to a card homogenizing the Metagame around the same problem across different matches.
Flow State is a card that we're keeping an eye on as the spiritual successor of Expressive Iteration, but so far it looks to be a tool for the good of the format, helping games decompress and play a bit longer.
Finally, we are aware that the community has taken notice of The Fantasticar. It isn't lost on us that this is a card that plays very well with the fast mana and colorless artifact enablers of Eternal formats. We expect that the card has a higher risk of ruin in Vintage than in Legacy, but this announcement should be taken as a demonstration that we are willing to act quickly in the event that a card proves to be an obvious detriment to either format.
BANNED AND RESTRICTED ANNOUNCEMENT – JUNE 29, 2026
Legacy
Candelabra of Tawnos is banned.
Candelabra of Tawnos was on the inaugural Legacy banned list when the format was founded in 1996. Back then, it was called "Type 1.5," as it was halfway between Vintage (then known as "Type 1") and Standard (then known as "Type 2"). The first Legacy banned list was comprised of cards that were banned or restricted in Type 1 and Type 2.
After Tolarian Academy was banned in Legacy, Candelabra of Tawnos was unbanned in early 1999. Paired with the banning of Time Spiral and Memory Jar, the two sources of card draw that were notorious for abusing fast mana in the era, that unbanning went well … for a time.
While we will continue to print exciting lands and card-draw engines, we are extremely careful about printing cards that untap your lands. The core issue specific to Candelabra is that it rarely shows up unless it is in a problematically strong combo deck, where it is often the highest value-above-replacement card in the deck. We are concerned that trying to ban around Candelabra would result in similar situations in the future.
