Texas' State Mammal Gets New Name
There may be four different species of nine-banded armadillo, which is the official state animal of Texas. One of these species is new to science, according to a new study in the journal Systematic Biology. A new species of armadillo has been found, the first in 30 years.
This gives the species of armadillo that lives in the U.S. a new name. Small mammals called armadillos have armor-like shells made of bony plates and flexible skin that protect them from being eaten. This animal, Dasypus novemcinctus, was thought to live between the central U.S. and Argentina.
Its range had grown from South America to Central America and the U.S., up to Illinois and Nebraska in the north. Scientists have found that what they thought was a single species made up of different types is actually four species of armadillo that are genetically different but look a lot alike.
It lived in the Guiana Shield in northeastern South America and was the newest species of armadillo. It was named Dasypus guianensis, which means "Guiana long-nosed armadillo."
