Russia is replenishing its troops with an unlikely source — African migrants and students. Thousands of Africans have been forced to join in Russia's war against Ukraine, per Bloomberg. The country has also been plugging its manpower gaps by sending prison inmates to the battlefield. Russia is forcing thousands of African migrants and students to join in their war efforts against Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, citing assessments from European officials. According to Bloomberg's report, Russian officials have threatened not to renew the visas of African migrant workers and students if they didn't join the Russian Armed Forces. Some African workers have even been threatened with deportation if they do not agree to fight in Ukraine, one European official told Bloomberg. Others have resorted to bribing Russian officials to stay out of the conflict, per the outlet. https://www.yahoo.com/news/not-just-convicts-russia-forcing-050807426.html

President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the lower house of France’s parliament in a surprise announcement sending voters back to the polls in the coming weeks to choose lawmakers, after his party was handed a humbling defeat by the far-right in the European elections Sunday. The legislative elections will take place in two rounds on June 30 and July 7. The announcement came after the first projected results from France put the far-right National Rally party well ahead in the European Union’s parliamentary elections, handing a chastening loss to Macron’s pro-European centrists, according to French opinion poll institutes. Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigration, nationalist party was estimated to get around 31%-32% of the votes, a historic result more than double the share of Macron’s Renaissance party, which was projected to reach around 15%. https://apnews.com/article/france-european-election-national-rally-marine-lepen-b132616d24de829660d8dbe0659e50fd

The first batch of 640,000 doses of the adapted vaccine will be shipped as early as next week. The EU’s health crisis authority will sign a contract with Seqirus next Tuesday to secure hundreds of thousands of doses of its H5N1 flu shot adapted to protect people against the latest deadly strain of bird flu — and first doses will head to Finland. The Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) will sign the joint procurement contract with Seqirus on behalf of 15 member countries, a senior Commission official with knowledge of the matter told POLITICO. The first batch of vaccines will be immediately shipped to Finland, the official said, where workers in mink farms are considered at risk of contracting the virus from contaminated animals. The contract is currently for 640,000 doses, with the possibility to buy up to 40 million doses over four years. https://www.politico.eu/article/finland-to-receive-first-eu-procured-bird-flu-shots

Amazon workers in India endure extreme heat, lack of breaks, and safety concerns. They demand better conditions as temperatures reach 50°C. Amazon workers in India are facing distressing conditions inside warehouses amidst a severe ongoing heatwave that has sent temperatures reaching up to 50°C in some areas. Thousands of workers across Amazon warehouses in the country are demanding better working conditions. Manju Goel, leader of the association in Haryana’s Manesar, said there was no ventilation or cooling, making conditions unbearable. She said the roughly 2,000 workers in her warehouse face oppressive conditions every day, standing for 10 hours straight with no seating for a meagre monthly salary of around ₹10,000 rupees. “We cannot go to the washroom for hours at end and the break rooms are very small which cannot contain so many workers, it gets unbearable especially in the heat,” Goel said. Workers also criticised Amazon’s strict attendance policy. “If we miss a day due to health reasons or family emergencies, our IDs are blocked, impacting our livelihoods,” one worker said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/amazon-warehouse-workers-complain-of-harsh-conditions-101717702024420.html

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said his legitimacy is recognised and determined by the Ukrainian people, while criticizing that of Russian President Vladimir Putin. "President Zelenskiy's legitimacy is recognised by the people of Ukraine... Our people are free. Putin's legitimacy is recognised only by comrade Putin," he told a press conference in Paris. Presidential elections in Ukraine were supposed to take place this spring, following Zelenskiy's five-year term of office. However, martial law introduced following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 bans any wartime election. The constitution says the president serves until a newly elected one takes office. Putin claimed several times that Zelenskiy is illegitimate after his five-year term ended this May. Western leaders have not questioned Zelenskiy's legitimacy, and sociologists say there is a consensus among Ukrainians that Zelenskiy should stay in office until the war ends. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/zelenskiy-says-its-ukraine-determine-his-legitimacy-not-putin-2024-06-07/

Ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has been engaged in nuclear sabre-rattling, dropping a series of not-so-subtle hints that trying to defeat a nuclear power like Russia could have disastrous consequences for those who try. Today President Putin claimed that Russia wouldn’t need to use a nuclear weapon to achieve victory in Ukraine. The Kremlin leader said he did not rule out changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine: the document which sets out the conditions under which Russia would use nuclear weapons. “This doctrine is a living tool and we are carefully watching what is happening in the world around us and do not exclude making changes to this doctrine. This is also related to the testing of nuclear weapons.” And he delivered a warning to those European countries who’ve been supporting Ukraine: Russia’s has “many more [tactical nuclear weapons] than there are on the European continent, even if the United States brings theirs over.” “Europe does not have a developed [early warning system],” he added. “In this sense they are more or less defenceless.” https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn00e422yr2o

The Jewish state added to list that includes terrorist groups al-Qaeda, ISIS and Boko Haram The United Nations has decided to add Israel to its blacklist of countries and organizations harming children in conflict zones, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told Israel’s defense attache in the U.S., Maj.-Gen. Hedy Silberman, Israeli media reported on Thursday. Despite Israel's weeks-long efforts to dissuade Guterres from taking this step, Israel is expected to be included on the list to be published next week as part of a report to the UN Security Council, according to local Channel 13 News. “The meaning of Israel’s inclusion in the blacklist is very problematic and may cause countries in the world to impose an arms embargo on Israel,” the sources added. Israel will join a UN blacklist of countries, including Afghanistan, Congo, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Syria, as well as terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda, ISIS and Boko Haram. Last year, Russia was added to the list for its attack on Ukrainian schools and hospitals and for transferring children from Ukraine to Russia. The list includes the aforementioned countries and organizations under the heading: “Parties that have not taken sufficient steps to improve the protection of children.” https://allisrael.com/united-nations-to-put-israel-on-blacklist-of-countries-harming-children-in-conflict-zones

The delay to a $61bn war aid package to Ukraine was partly blamed for Russian gains in areas close to Kharkiv US President Joe Biden has apologised to his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, for the first time following a months-long delay to American military aid for Kyiv. The delay to a $61bn war aid package to Ukraine, which was held up in the US Senate for a month, was partly blamed for Russian gains in areas close to Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second biggest city. The package passed in Congress in late April. Mr Biden issued the public apology to Mr Zelensky on Friday in Paris, a day after they both attended a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Mr Biden said: “I apologise for those weeks of not knowing what’s going to happen in terms of funding. “Some of our very conservative members [of Congress] were holding it up. But we got it done, finally.” He insisted that the US would continue to stand by Ukraine. “We’re still in. Completely. Thoroughly.” https://inews.co.uk/news/world/biden-zelensky-apology-russia-advance-3098236

The American Civil Liberties Union announced plans to sue the White House over President Biden's new executive order that would close off access to asylum when border numbers surge. The organization signaled its plans to sue even before Biden signed the order, demonstrating how fierce opposition to the move will be. "We intend to sue. A ban on asylum is illegal just as it was when Trump unsuccessfully tried it," Lee Gelernt, who successfully argued a similar challenge under former President Trump, told Axios. https://www.axios.com/2024/06/04/aclu-sue-biden-border-executive-order

The president made the comment in an interview last week, several days before he announced that Israel had offered a three-part plan to end the war in Gaza. President Joe Biden said in a recent interview released Tuesday that there is "every reason" to think Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is prolonging Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza for political gain. The comment came in an interview conducted by Time magazine on May 28 when Biden was asked if he believes Netanyahu is prolonging the conflict for self-preservation as some in Israel have said. "I’m not going to comment on that. There is every reason for people to draw that conclusion," Biden said, adding that before the war, Netanyahu was facing blowback for wanting an overhaul of the nation's judicial system. "So it’s an internal domestic debate that seems to have no consequence. And whether he would change his position or not, it’s hard to say, but it has not been helpful.” Biden explained that his major disagreement with the Israeli prime minister is over Gaza's future after the war ends. "What happens after Gaza’s over? What, what does it go back to? Do Israeli forces go back in?" he asked. "I've been talking to the Egyptians and been talking to the Saudis. I’ve been talking to the Jordanians, I’ve been talking to the Emiratis. The answer is, if that’s the case, it can’t work. There needs to be a two-state solution, a transition to a two-state solution. And that’s my biggest disagreement with Bibi Netanyahu." https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/biden-netanyahu-israel-hamas-war-rcna155386

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely have to seek power-sharing agreements to clinch a historic third term in power, with his Bharatiya Janata Party set to fall short of an outright majority in the country’s lower house of Parliament. By Tuesday afternoon, ongoing vote counts suggested that Modi’s BJP is likely to win just 239 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. India’s Parliament has 543 seats, and the party or coalition that wins at least 272 forms the government. The surprise shortfall raises questions over his popularity — and risks stifling any immediate policies that the BJP was hoping to implement. Instead, Modi will have to look to smaller allies in the wider BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, or NDA, which is set to get a combined 294 parliamentary seats, according to local media. Meanwhile, the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, or INDIA, led by the Indian National Congress, is expected to win 231 seats — a much better result than previously predicted. If the numbers hold, the BJP alone would lose 64 seats compared with its 2019 general election tally of 303. The wider BJP-led alliance won 353 seats in 2019. Modi reportedly said in March that he was confident that the NDA would secure more than 400 seats. Modi declared victory late Tuesday, despite the reduced majority. “People have placed their faith in NDA, for a third consecutive time! This is a historical feat in India’s history,” Modi said on X as counting was nearing a conclusion. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/04/india-elections-modis-bjp-led-alliance-set-for-narrower-than-expected-win.html

This is not how the election was supposed to go for Modi, who has a vast base of supporters both at home and among the large Indian diaspora who see him as responsible for India’s rocketing economy and rising confidence on the world stage. According to Morning Consult, Modi is by far the world’s most popular leader, with an approval rating of 74%. Critics say Modi has also eroded human rights in India, the world’s largest democracy, and stoked religious tensions, particularly against India’s Muslim minority, with Modi and other BJP candidates accused of hate speech and other inflammatory rhetoric during the campaign. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/india-election-results-narendra-modi-rcna154839/

Narendra Modi vowed to continue as India’s prime minister even after his party lost its majority in parliament, forcing him to rely on allies to form a government for the first time since he stormed to power a decade ago. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party was leading in 240 seats, short of the 272 needed for a majority, while his National Democratic Alliance had 293 seats — enough to form a government if it sticks together. The opposition bloc, known as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, was on course to win 229 seats, the results showed. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-04/modi-poised-to-lose-india-majority-need-allies-to-keep-power

Nato is developing multiple “land corridors” to rush US troops and armour to the front lines in the event of a major European ground war with Russia. American soldiers would land at one of five ports and be channelled along pre-planned logistical routes to confront a possible attack by Moscow, officials told The Telegraph. It comes amid warnings from the Alliance’s top leaders that Western governments must prepare themselves for a conflict with Russia in the next two decades. Logistical routes have become a key priority since Nato leaders agreed to prepare 300,000 troops to be kept in a state of high readiness to defend the alliance at a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, last year. Existing plans have US troops landing at Dutch ports before boarding trains that transport them through Germany and onwards to Poland. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/06/04/nato-land-corridors-us-troops-european-war/

In marked shift from the past, Saudi textbooks no longer define Zionism as ‘racist,’ indicating progress towards a ‘warm peace’ such as that with the UAE, expert says A study of Saudi school textbooks has found increased progress on the kingdom’s portrayal of Israel and Zionism, in continuation of a positive trend that has emerged in recent years. Textbooks for the 2023-2024 school year no longer teach that Zionism is a “racist” European movement, and no longer deny the historical Jewish presence in the region, according to the study, published last week by the nonprofit IMPACT-se, which monitors educational curricula in Middle Eastern and North African countries. “It’s a small step that shows a change of narrative towards Israel, and showcases more tolerance and openness,” said Nimrod Goren, who heads Mitvim – The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies, to The Times of Israel. Designations of Israel as an “enemy state” have been expunged, but references to the “Israeli occupation” can still be found, and the curriculum still underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause. The name “Israel” still does not appear on maps, but the name “Palestine,” which previously covered the entirety of Israeli territory, has now been removed, the report highlights. https://www.timesofisrael.com/saudi-arabia-largely-removes-negative-portrayal-of-israel-from-its-school-curriculum/

“A first victory against Big Tech,” the MEP wrote following the ruling. A Belgian judge has ordered Meta to pay more than €27,000 in damages to a Belgian far-right MEP. Meta had imposed a "shadowban," which lowers a user's organic reach on their platforms, on the page of Tom Vandendriessche, MEP for the Belgian far-right party Vlaams Belang, in February 2021. A Belgian judge ruled on Monday, however, that in imposing the shadowban Meta had not acted "in good faith" regarding its agreements. It also said that users had "insufficient procedural guarantees" when Meta imposed such measures. Meta's decision also violated the EU's data protection regime, the GDPR. A Chinese general has accused the United States of trying to create “an Asia-Pacific version of NATO” to maintain American-led hegemony in the region. Lieut Gen Jing Jianfeng of the People’s Liberation Army was responding on Saturday to comments by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin about Washington’s actions in the region, including forging partnerships, which are designed to stem Beijing’s military assertiveness. The two men are among the senior defence officials from around the world attending the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual security forum held in Singapore. The agenda features a host of contentious issues including Taiwan, as well as China’s relationship with Russia. The United States’ Indo-Pacific strategy is political rhetoric that sounds good but does no good, Jing told the forum. North Korea said Sunday it will stop sending trash-filled balloons into South Korea, after the democratic nation pledged to take “unbearable” steps in retaliation. A North Korean vice defense minister, Kim Kang II, said Sunday that his country sent the balloons in response to South Korea’s previous leaflet campaigns, which often spread critical messaging of North Korean leaders among the people who live in the authoritarian country and who, therefore, lack access to outside news. Kim said the country was prepared to resume sending trash-filled balloons if South Korea resumed its anti-Pyongyang leaflet campaign in North Korea. “We made the [Republic of Korea] clans get enough experience of how much unpleasant they feel and how much effort is needed to remove the scattered wastepaper,” Kim said in a statement carried by North Korean state media, The Associated Press (AP) reported. https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-korea-says-stop-sending-215730450.html

Officials from the United States, Israel and Egypt ended a meeting in Cairo on Sunday with Egypt sticking to its position that Israel must withdraw from the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing for it to operate again, two Egyptian security sources said. Israel seized the crossing on the Gaza side in May during its offensive in the city of Rafah along the enclave's southern edge, angering Egypt which said it would stop cooperating with Israel on the crucial artery for aid into the strip and evacuations out of it. The Egyptian security sources said Sunday's meeting was positive despite there being no agreement on reopening of the crossing. Egypt's delegation at the meeting said it would be open to European monitors at the border to oversee its operation by Palestinian authorities if Palestinian authorities agreed to resume work. Israeli and U.S. officials said they would work quickly to remove the obstacles to the operation of the crossing, the Egyptian sources said. Tensions have risen between Egypt and Israel over the takeover of the southern border, which Israel said had been completed on Wednesday. While Egypt facilitated the entrance of aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing last week, the re-opening of Rafah is crucial as humanitarian agencies warn of looming famine in Gaza. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/egypt-demands-israel-withdraws-rafah-crossing-it-operate-again-sources-say-2024-06-02/
