Dear Readers, In this issue, Ketema looks back on a project that successfully boycotted the use of glazing on its exterior surface in an attempt to redefined the ideal shopping mall design for Addis Ababa. Designed by Vilalta Studio based in Barcelona, the design took inspiration from Merkato, the largest open air market in Africa. Back in 2017, the building won a special prize for its facade design at Prix Versailles. The facade of the building was designed considering the local climate conditions coupled with the fractal pattern commonly found in the local fabrics.
