You are a department manager in an advertising agency. The employees of the department have recently completed an attitude survey. Three employees in your department reported that they were harassed by senior people in the department and they are experiencing a hostile work environment. You do not know who these people are, but you feel that you need to do something. The surveys were filled out confidentially, and employees were assured that their identities would not be revealed to management. You feel that you can identify who they are because the person in HR who administered the survey is a friend of yours and that person can tell you the demographics of the employees, which would help you identify them.
1. Should you ask for the identity-revealing information? What are the advantages and disadvantages of finding out the identity of these people?
2. How would you handle a situation like this now and in the future?
Operating profit = $100,000 - $50,000 = $50,000
The operating profit margin is therefore:
Operating profit margin = (Operating profit / Revenue) x 100
Operating profit margin = ($50,000 / $100,000) x 100
Operating profit margin = 50%
Therefore, the company's operating profit margin is 50%.
✅If an item that costs $50 is discounted by 20%, what is the sale price?
📝Solution: The discount on the item is 20% of the original price, or:
Discount = 20% x $50 = $10
The sale price is the original price minus the discount, or:
Sale price = $50 - $10 = $40
Therefore, the sale price of the item is $40.
✅A company has $500,000 in assets and $200,000 in liabilities. What is the company's debt-to-equity ratio?
📝Solution: Debt-to-equity ratio is the ratio of a company's total liabilities to its equity. It can be calculated by dividing the total liabilities by the equity. The equity is the difference between the assets and the liabilities, or:
Equity = Assets - Liabilities
Equity = $500,000 - $200,000 = $300,000
The debt-to-equity ratio is therefore:
Debt-to-equity ratio = Total liabilities / Equity
Debt-to-equity ratio = $200,000 / $300,000
Debt-to-equity ratio = 0.67
Therefore, the company's debt-to-equity ratio is 0.67.
✅A company has a net income of $100,000 and pays $30,000 in taxes. What is the company's after-tax income?
📝Solution: After-tax income is the income that a company has left after taxes have been deducted. It can be calculated by subtracting the taxes from the net income. Therefore, the company's after-tax income is:
After-tax income = Net income - Taxes
After-tax income = $100,000 - $30,000
After-tax income = $70,000
Therefore, the company's after-tax income is $70,000.
✅A company has $1,000,000 in sales and a net profit margin of 10%. What is the company's net profit?
📝Solution: Net profit is the profit that a company makes after all expenses have been deducted from the revenue. It can be calculated by multiplying the sales by the net profit margin. Therefore, the company's net profit is:
Net profit = Sales x Net profit margin
Net profit =$1,000,000 x 10% = $100,000
Therefore, the company's net profit is $100,000.
✅If an investment of $10,000 earns compound interest at a rate of 5% per year, how much will it be worth after 5 years?
📝Solution: Compound interest is interest that is earned not only on the initial investment, but also on any interest that is accumulated. It can be calculated using the formula:
A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt)
where A is the total amount, P is the principal, r is the interest rate, n is the number of times interest is compounded per year, and t is the number of years. In this case, we have:
P = $10,000, r = 5%, n = 1 (interest is compounded once per year)
t = 5 years
Therefore, the total amount is:
A = $10,000(1 + 0.05/1)^(15)
A = $12,763.56
Therefore, the investment will be worth $12,763.56 after 5 years.
✅If a loan of $50,000 is borrowed at an annual interest rate of 8% for 5 years, what is the total amount of interest paid?
📝Solution: The total amount of interest paid on a loan can be calculated using the formula:
I = Prt
where I is the total interest, P is the principal, r is the interest rate, and t is the time period in years. In this case, we have:
P = $50,000
r = 8%
t = 5 years
Therefore, the total amount of interest paid is:
I = $50,000 * 0.08 * 5
I = $20,000
Therefore, the total amount of interest paid is $20,000.
✅If a product is sold for $100 and the sales tax rate is 8%, what is the total cost?
📝Solution: The sales tax is calculated as a percentage of the sale price. Therefore, the sales tax on a product sold for $100 at a rate of 8% is:
Sales tax = 8% x $100 = $8
The total cost of the product is the sale price plus the sales tax, or:
Total cost = $100 + $8 = $108
Therefore, the total cost of the product is $108.

✅John has invested $10,000 in a savings account that earns 3% interest compounded annually. How much money will John have in his account after 5 years?
📝Solution: After 5 years, the total amount of money John will have in his account can be calculated using the formula A = P(1+r/n)^(nt), where A is the total amount, P is the principal amount, r is the annual interest rate, n is the number of times interest is compounded per year, and t is the number of years. Plugging in the values, we get:
A = 10000(1+0.03/1)^(15)
A = 10000(1.03)^5
A = $11,592.74
Therefore, John will have $11,592.74 in his savings account after 5 years.
✅A company sells a product for $100, and it has a cost of $50 to produce. What is the profit margin for this product?
📝Solution: Profit margin can be calculated by dividing the profit by the selling price and multiplying by 100. The profit for this product is $100 - $50 = $50. Therefore, the profit margin is:
Profit margin = (50/100) x 100
Profit margin = 50%
Therefore, the profit margin for this product is 50%.
✅If the tax rate is 20%, what is the net price of a product that costs $100?
📝Solution: The net price of a product is the price after taxes have been applied. To calculate the net price, we need to add the tax to the original price. The tax is calculated as 20% of the original price, which is $20. Therefore, the net price of the product is:
Net price = Original price + Tax
Net price = $100 + $20
Net price = $120
Therefore, the net price of the product is $120.
✅A company has $50,000 in assets and $20,000 in liabilities. What is the company's equity?
📝Solution: Equity is the difference between the company's assets and liabilities. Therefore, the equity of the company is:
Equity = Assets - Liabilities
Equity = $50,000 - $20,000
Equity = $30,000
Therefore, the company's equity is $30,000.
✅A company has a gross profit of $50,000 and operating expenses of $30,000. What is the company's net profit?
📝Solution: Net profit is the profit after all expenses have been deducted from the revenue. To calculate the net profit, we need to subtract the operating expenses from the gross profit. Therefore, the net profit of the company is:
Net profit = Gross profit - Operating expenses
Net profit = $50,000 - $30,000
Net profit = $20,000
Therefore, the company's net profit is $20,000.
✅Mary wants to borrow $10,000 from a bank at a 5% annual interest rate. If she agrees to pay the loan back in 2 years, how much interest will she have to pay?
📝Solution: The interest on the loan can be calculated using the formula I = P x R x T, where I is the interest, P is the principal amount, R is the annual interest rate, and T is the time period. Plugging in the values, we get:
I = $10,000 x 0.05 x 2
I = $1,000
Therefore, Mary will have to pay $1,000
✅A company sells a product for $500 and has a profit margin of 25%. What is the cost of producing the product?
📝Solution: Profit margin is the percentage of profit that a company makes on the selling price of a product. It can be calculated by dividing the profit by the selling price and multiplying by 100. We know that the profit margin is 25%, so the profit must be 25% of the selling price, or:
Profit = 25% x $500 = $125
The cost of producing the product is the selling price minus the profit, or:
Cost = $500 - $125 = $375
Therefore, the cost of producing the product is $375.
✅A company has a revenue of $100,000 and operating expenses of $50,000. What is the company's operating profit margin?
