We first met Ivy when she and her sister Fern were just a few months old, two little barn kittens who needed a second chance. When Ivy was spayed, the veterinarian found one ovary… but could not find the second. She searched as long as it was safely possible, but eventually had to stop. Maybe Ivy had only been born with one. Or maybe the other was hiding somewhere it absolutely did not belong. Spoiler: it was hiding. Ivy stayed with us for a year and a half before she was finally adopted. And for years, she had a home. A person who loved her. A place where she belonged. A couple of months ago, Ivy’s person moved and couldn’t take her along. So at seven years old, Ivy came back to the rescue. And she is not doing well here. Since returning, Ivy has gone into heat twice. We know because Ivy *sings the song of her people* at a volume that could probably be heard from the parking lot. We can live with that. Our phone conversations may be a little interesting, but that isn’t the problem. The problem is the other cats. Our neutered males are thoroughly confused by Ivy’s hormones. The females are territorial. Ivy has become a target from both directions, and now she spends most of her time hiding. She doesn’t understand why the home she had is gone. She doesn’t understand why the other cats won’t leave her alone. She just knows that the safest place is somewhere no one can see her. Our only way to completely protect her here would be to keep her alone in a kennel, and we desperately do not want that for her. Ivy needs an only-cat home as soon as possible. Yes, she will occasionally go into heat. She cannot become pregnant, but because that elusive ovarian tissue remains, she may still have heat cycles. With no other cats around and the stress of shelter life gone, we expect those periods to be much easier for her to manage. The hardest part is that Ivy is now so frightened that she usually won’t even come out to meet visitors. And it is incredibly hard to get adopted when no one ever gets the chance to see you. So we need you to see her here. Please share Ivy’s story. Somewhere out there is a quiet home with no other cats and a person who won’t mind the occasional dramatic serenade. Ivy waited a year and a half for her first home. We really, really don’t want her to have to wait that long again. sheridancatrescue.org/adopt

"I'm blind and no one wants me. I'm also a senior. They say that makes me unlovable." My name is Tabby. And for seven years, I had a home. I knew the warmth of a sunbeam on my favorite spot on the rug. I knew the sound of a familiar voice, the rhythm of a household, the quiet comfort of belonging. I had a life. I had a family. I thought I was home forever. But one day, the world I knew ended. They said I had trouble with the litterbox. And just like that, I lost everything. Every familiar scent, every comforting sound, every shred of security I had ever known, gone. Now, I am here. And I am so, so scared. You see, I am blind. The lights went out for me a long time ago, but I learned to navigate my world by memory and trust. Here, in this shelter, there is no memory to guide me. The walls are cold and strange. The sounds are loud and jarring, bouncing off surfaces I cannot see. I don't know where I am. I don't know why I was left. All I know is fear. Because I can't see what's coming, I react the only way I know how. I have swiped at hands that reached for me. I have hissed and scratched. Please, I need you to understand it isn't because I'm mean. It isn't because I'm broken. It's because I am terrified. Imagine being plunged into darkness and surrounded by strangers, with no way to know who is friend or foe. But there is a truth I wish you could see. The people here have noticed something. They've noticed that my litterbox is clean. That I use it perfectly. The problems I had at home haven't happened here. Maybe it was the stress. Maybe it was the environment. We will never really know. All I know is that I am trying so hard to be good. I am trying to show them that underneath this blind, scared shell, I am still Tabby. I am still the cat who loves a gentle voice and a soft bed. I am still worthy of love. But no one sees that. They see a senior. They see a blind cat. They see a "problem." New York City is a harsh place to be forgotten, and it is even harsher for a cat like me. The noise, the chaos, the endless strangers, it's drowning me. I am fading here. The longer I stay, the more my fear turns to despair. I need a miracle. I need someone with a patient heart, someone who understands that trust isn't given; it's earned. Someone who can offer a quiet room, a soft voice, and the time to let me learn that I am safe. That I won't be thrown away again. I need an experienced hand, not because I am dangerous, but because I am heartbroken. I need someone to fight for me. Because I can't fight anymore. I'm just a blind, old girl in a cage, waiting for a home that may never come. Please. Don't let this be the end of my story. They say I have "issues." I say I have a broken heart. And the only cure is a home. If you can find it in your heart to be my hero, to give an old, blind cat a soft place to land… I promise I will spend the rest of my days trying to find my way back to the sunlight. All I need is a chance to feel safe again, even in the dark. Please. See me. Save me. TABBY | Senior | Blind | Needs a hero. She is at Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC)
