The Rakhmabai case of 1884 was a landmark legal case in India that involved Rukhmabai Raut, the first female doctor to practice in colonial India, and her husband Dadaji Bhikaji. The case was a result of Rukhmabai's refusal to live with her husband after nine years of marriage, when he demanded she do so in March 1884. Rukhmabai argued that she was married off as a child without her consent, and the court gave her the option to either comply with her husband or face imprisonment. Rukhmabai chose to go to jail, and the case became a highly publicized debate on the age of consent for marriage. The case also involved issues of restitution of conjugal rights and age of consent. Rukhmabai wrote to Queen Victoria, who overruled the court's decision and dissolved the marriage. The case's impact led to the Age of Consent Act of 1891, which made child marriages illegal across the British Empire.
