TI’s gallium nitride (GaN) technology combined with TI’s digital power Piccolo™ microcontrollers, enable boost and inverter stages that can operate in excess of 100kHz, compared to traditional insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) designs running at less than 20KHz. 

Sounds like a sales pitch? Not really. According to the Solar Energies Industries Association, in 2015, California led the nation by installing 3,266MW of solar electric capacity; that’s enough solar energy to power 3,494,000 homes. Still, each of these homes needs an inverter to convert the DC voltage from the panels to the AC voltages used inside.

"Engineers have reached the limit – they can't push more power in the space they have and they don't want to increase the space their equipment needs," said Masoud Beheshti, a product manager at TI. "If the form factor can't change, the only knob you can play with is power density."

The centerpiece of any power-management system is a switch, which turns power on and off. It’s like a light switch on your wall, except millions of times faster and smaller. Efficiency (low losses), reliability, integration and affordability are critical attributes of a semiconductor power switch.

Or consider this: Every simple Internet search query uses enough electricity to burn a 60-watt light bulb for about 17 seconds. Now multiply that by billions of queries happening every day and you end up with billions of kilowatt hours of energy consumption.

Imagine an electric-vehicle charger that gets you on the road twice as fast as chargers used today or a motor drive that takes half the space and offers more efficiency than current applications or a laptop computer power adapter that fits in your pocket. The future of electronics depends on power-management innovations.

"If you just need a 3 percent or 4 percent efficiency improvement, you can get that other ways". "But if you need to double power density, GaN is your only option."

Where GaN will go next GaN is already replacing silicon in key industries where improved power density is a premium feature.
