🇺🇸 US MIDTERMS UPDATE The Republican Party is facing a devastating election night. Prediction markets on Kalshihave surged to 99% in favor of Democrats taking control of BOTH the House and Senate 📸, with the probability of a complete Democratic sweep approaching 100%. We had anticipated an extreme - never seen before Democratic victory and developments so far point to exactly that - if not even worse for the Republicans. ► The implications for Trump will be enormous. Democrats are about to secure both chambers and will become a lame-duck president in legislative terms for the remaining two years of his presidency. His ability to advance major parts of his domestic agenda will be severely constrained, while Democrats would gain powerful tools to investigate his administration, scrutinize executive decisions challenge government spending. Perhaps even more consequential would be the changing political dynamics within the Republican Party itself. A sufficiently severe defeat will very likely undermine Trump's authority over his own party. Republican lawmakers, including some previously loyal "MAGA" supporters, may increasingly question whether continued unconditional support for Trump serves their political interests ahead of the 2028 elections. Internal divisions will intensify, particularly if Republicans conclude that the president's policies contributed to their electoral losses -> In reality Trump is the one and only reason. ► A politically weakened Trump would likely not mean a less confrontational presidency. With his legislative options restricted, he could rely more heavily on executive powers, tariffs and foreign policy, areas in which the president retains considerable discretion. This creates some additional uncertainty, particularly given the fragile geopolitical situation. At the same time, stronger congressional opposition / potentially declining Republican unity will constrain some of his decisions. ► For financial markets, the initial implications are mixed, but we see headwinds for equities. US stock futures have already come under some pressure as the prospect of a Democratic sweep has strengthened, with tech stocks particularly vulnerable. Markets generally like a split scenario - in which neither party can push agendas through without the need to get bi-partisan support. Democratic control of Congress will likely result in significantly greater scrutiny of major technology companies, artificial intelligence, data-center expansion and corporate market power. This comes also at a sensitive time, with investors already questioning the sustainability of enormous AI infrastructure investments and the ability of companies to generate sufficient returns on that spending. However, I would not overstate this, US tech / AI companies remain well ahead of competition - the money is and will be in the US to push technology forward. There could also be renewed political pressure for higher corporate taxes / tighter regulation. Actual tax increases would face major legislative obstacles, including Trump's presidential veto, but even the prospect of future policy changes could weigh on valuations. ► US Treasuries could benefit from a different set of expectations. A Democratic-controlled Congress would severely restrict Trump's ability to introduce additional deficit-financed tax cuts and other major fiscal initiatives. This could ease some concerns about the trajectory of US borrowing and provide support for longer-dated government bonds. However, this is not an entirely straightforward development for bonds. Political gridlock will also complicate budget negotiations and future debt-ceiling discussions. Inflation, Fed policy, US economic growth will remain of course important drivers of yields. ► This is a fundamental shift in Washington's balance of power. Instead of governing with Republican majorities in both chambers, Trump will face two years of congressional opposition + growing resistance from within his own party. Meanwhile Trump is shooting even against FOX News 📸 - he is losing it...
