It cannot be denied that various technologies have infiltrated all aspects of our daily life. But, whether their improvements reduces the crime rate or vice versa is a question worth raising. In this essay, I will discuss why recent security measures discourages criminals, but why new crime wave in relation to our cyber security remains a pressing issue. It has been well documented now that with the introduction of surveillance systems, the body of work police officers used to have has decreased to some extent. All these successes are thanks to the CCTV cameras that scare the potential thieves, as they know that it is way easier to be caught nowadays than in the past. Provided that the police departments make good use of all the cutting-edge technologies at their disposal, not only will it be easier to catch them after, but during, the act of robberies. Case in point, the United Arab Emirates famously uses “Smart Policing” and installed cameras in almost every corner of its regions, which has ensured a safe and crime-free community for years now. On the flip side, these possibilities are also available for those in the criminal world. It is not a secret that the word crime used to mean mostly violence, such as robbing banks and/or other people, committing murder to name but a few. With the advancements in technology, however, came more opportunities for those eying to carry our illicit activities, which have prompted them to try and find new ways of breaking the law. Cybercrime that includes identity theft, phishing, data breaches as well as hacking has become so common to the point, where the good that technology offers seems insufficient to praise it for the fight against crime, but enough to blame, which is a great example to show why there is frustration towards the rise of technology among the general public. In conclusion, it is true that technology can be used as a tool both to stop and commit crime. In my opinion, governments ought to do their best to outsmart the criminals in order to reduce crime on a global scale.
