■ PULICAT LAKE ◇ Pulicat Lagoon is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India, after Chilika Lake. ◇ Pulicat Lagoon is considered to be the second largest brackish water body in India measuring 759 square kilometres. ◇ The lagoon is one of the three important wetlands to attract northeast monsoon rain clouds during the October to December season in the Tirupati Region. ◇ The lagoon comprises the following regions, which adds up 759 square kilometres according to Andhra Pradesh Forest Department: 1) Pulicat Lake. 2) Marshy/Wetland Land Region. 3) Venadu Reserve Forest. 4) Pernadu Reserve Forest (AP). ◇ The lagoon was cut across in the middle by the Sriharikota Link Road. ◇ The lagoon encompasses the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary. ◇ The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lagoon from the Bay of Bengal and is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. ◇ Major part of the lagoon comes under Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. ▪︎ @upsc_geography_notes_optional

■ PONGONG LAKE ◇ Pangong Tso or Pangong Lake is an endorheic lake spanning eastern Ladakh and West Tibet situated at an elevation of 4,225 m. ◇ It is 134 km long and divided into five sublakes, called Pangong Tso, Tso Nyak, Rum Tsoand Nyak Tso. ◇ Approximately 50% of the length of the overall lake lies within Tibet, 40% in Ladakh and the rest is disputed but controlled by China. ◇ The lake is 5 km wide at its broadest point. All together it covers 604 km2. ◇ During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.
