DISTRIBUTION OF COTTON TEXTILE INDUSTRIES [ PART - 2] Gujarat ◇ Gujarat is the second largest producer of cotton textiles. ◇ Ahmedabad is the largest center where 73 out of 118 mills of Gujarat are located. ◇ Following facilities are available to Ahmedabad :- • Ahmedabad lies near the main cotton belt of India and there is no problem of obtaining raw material. • Climate is humid and is suited to this Industry. • Cheap and skilled labor is drawn from nearby areas. • Ahmedabad is served by a network of railways and roadways. • Land at Ahmedabad is much cheaper as compared to that in Mumbai. • Most of the Ahmedabad mills produce cheap cloth which finds a ready market among the poor masses of India. 4. COTTON TEXTILE INDUSTRY #Industries Growth and development ◇ The first modern cotton textile mill was set up in 1818 at Fort glister near Kolkata. But this mill could not survive. ◇ The first successful modern cotton textile mill was established at Mumbai in 1854 by a local parsi entrepreneur C.N. Dewar.Shahpur mill in 1861 and calico mill in 1863 at Ahmedabad were other landmarks in the development of cotton textile industry. ◇ Industry continued to progress till the outbreak of the First world war in 1914. ◇ Demand of cloth during in the second world war led to further progress of the Industry. ◇ The industry suffered a serious setback in 1947 when most of long staple cotton growing areas went to Pakistan as a result of Partition . Present position ◇ At present, Cotton textile industry is the largest organized modern industry of India.
