#BeOpenDESIGN DISPERSEED, a James Dyson Award 2022 finalist, is a 3D-printed seed ball designed by Irene Badía Madrigal, Diego Polo García, Carmen Amorós Egea, Claudia Daudén Llodrá, Carmen Benítez Mora & David Zaragozá Sabater, a team of industrial designers from Valencia Polytechnic University. The team, purposefully composed of members from diverse courses to encourage collaborative learning, sought to revitalize fire-ravaged forests. Their creation, a bright red, pollen-inspired bauble made from edible dough, attracts animals and birds. Seeds within are either dispersed by falling out or are ingested and carried far and wide by animals, eventually germinating after passing through their digestive systems. DISPERSEED, made from natural materials, biodegrades and helps re-establish floral diversity, creating more resilient forests.

#BeOpenART The small Icelandic town of Ísafjörður has implemented a 3D pedestrian crossing to improve traffic safety on a narrow street. Inspired by a similar project in India, Environmental Commissioner Ralf Trylla collaborated with Vegmálun GÍH to create an eye-popping optical illusion that makes the white stripes appear as floating blocks, prompting drivers to slow down. The project is currently experimental, with the town assessing its effectiveness before potentially expanding the initiative to other areas. via mymodernmet.com

#BeOpenDESIGN Glasses and mugs cleverly designed by TOAL offer a whimsical twist on everyday drinkware. Appearing as ordinary transparent vessels, they reveal either the Japanese word for “Coffee” or “Milk” upon pouring, thanks to a simple visual trick that leverages the natural colors of the beverages. Dark coffee hides the dark “Milk” text, while white milk conceals the white “Coffee” label. A mix of both reveals both words, making for a delightful mind game with your morning brew.
